The Duke men tennis team fell to ACC foe

The Duke mens tennis team fell to ACC foe Virginia Tech, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Duke fell to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Hokies improved their overall record to 10-5 and earned their first ACC victory of the season (1-3).

The Blue Devils won their fourth doubles point in seven matches as junior Nick Stachowiak and senior Jason Lapidus earned a 6-1 victory over Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Rebeiro. On court three, juniors Spencer Furman and Robert Levine kept their undefeated season alive as a pair, winning 6-1 over Carlo Donato and Freddy Mesmer. The junior duo is now 4-0 on the season at the number three position. Senior Catalin Mateas and sophomore Sean Sculley were down 4-3 to Jason Kros and Brandon Perez before the point was clinched.

In singles action, Rebeiro tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 court three victory over Mateas Rodney Hood Jersey. The Hokies gained the lead after Korsgaard prevailed over No. 114 Furman 6-2, 6-2 on court two. In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 66 Kross defeated No. 41 Stachowiak 6-2, 6-3 at number one singles, giving Virginia Tech a 3-1 advantage. The Hokies clinched the match after Evan Fragistas defeated Senior Vincent Lin on court six 6-4, 7-6 (7-6).

Donato defeated Sculley 6-4, 6-0, 6-1 on court six, however, Levine earned his fifth victory of the season with a 6-2, 7-5 (10-7) win court five. The victory is Levines fourth in his last five decisions.

Duke next travels to Clemson, S.C., on Friday for a 3:30 p Amile Jefferson Jersey.m. showdown. The Blue Devils end their three-match road trip at Georgia Tech on Sunday at 12 noon.
After being the consensus No. 1 team in the country and the consensus No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils struggled down the stretch once the ACC Player of the Year, Zion Williamson went down with an injury.

Since his injury on February 20, the Blue Devils have slid down the ladder of No. 1 seeds and in ESPNs latest Bracketology Duke is a No. 2 seed.
While there was clearly still a path for Duke to become a No. 1 seed once again with a great performance at the ACC Tournament this week, the door was busted open for the No. 1 overall seed after Gonzaga Bulldogs fell to the St. Marys Gaels on Tuesday night.
