In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

Somebody in nearly every class asks what to do with the gun when it has to stay in the car for a while, or when they’re packing for a trip. I give the same answer each time: lock it in a box, and tie the box to something that can’t walk off.

A small box like the Dalmbox Compact Pistol Lock Box is one of the answers we talk through. My verdict: it’s a slim, cheap, battery-free box with a three-wheel code and a steel cable. The catch is an inside height under an inch, so measure your gun before anything else.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

Dalmbox Compact Pistol Lock Box – Best Battery-Free Travel Lock Box Under $50

HIGHLIGHT:

A mechanical 3-digit code lock with nothing to charge, on a 1.8-inch-thick steel box with a security cable.

OUT OF THE BOX:

Dalmbox lists a cable and instructions as what comes with the box. In the photos you can see it open with egg-crate foam in the lid and the floor, the instruction card and a bagged cable laid out on top, and the back of the lock showing on the inside of the lid.

One photo shows a box arriving in a resale bag with an Amazon Warehouse “second life” sticker. Nothing wrong with saving a few dollars on an open-box unit, but check that the cable and instructions are in there, and set the combination to your own number before a gun goes in. A returned box may not be on the factory setting anymore.

COMBINATION LOCK:

The lock is three number wheels and a button. Dalmbox lists it as a mechanical code lock, so there are no batteries, nothing to charge, and nothing to die while the box sits in a glovebox in August. In the photos you can see a hand at the latch on the closed box.

The trade-off is the code itself. Three digits give you at most a thousand combinations. That’s enough to keep a child or a nosy passenger out. It won’t hold up to somebody who has time to sit there and roll the wheels.

Skip 123, 000 and your birth year. Pick something you’ll remember in the dark with your heart going, and never write it on the box. Dalmbox also says there’s a version with a key lock and two keys, so check which one you’re ordering. If you get the key version, the keys don’t live in the glovebox with the box.

INSIDE ROOM:

This is the number that decides it. Dalmbox lists the outside at 9.4 by 6.4 by 1.8 inches and the inside at 9.1 by 6.1 by 0.9 inches. Nine-tenths of an inch is shallow. A lot of carry pistols are thicker than that once you count the grip, the magazine baseplate or a sight.

In the photos you can see the box open with a pistol and magazines laid inside.

Dalmbox says it’s designed for compact pistols and also for cash, passports and jewelry, but it doesn’t name a gun that fits. Measure yours at its thickest and tallest points, sights included, leave room for the foam, and check the return policy before you order.

Two close-ups have spots circled on a pistol, one on the grip and one at the back of the slide. The pictures don’t say what’s being pointed out, so I won’t guess. But with an inside that tight, the lid sits close on the gun, so I’d look the finish over now and then.

BUILD & FOAM:

Dalmbox lists a carbon steel body with foam lining. The foam keeps the gun from sliding around and scratching. The listing gives no steel gauge, no anti-pry feature and no certification. It also calls the box water resistant, with no rating or test behind it, so keep it dry anyway.

The spec sheet has a “capacity” line of 2.7 pounds, which reads more like a shipping weight than anything else. I wouldn’t lean on it. Take the box for what it is: a child-resistant box that slows down a smash-and-grab when it’s tied down. It isn’t a vault.

SECURITY CABLE:

The cable is the only anchor this box has. The listing calls it freestanding and tabletop, and the seller says the cable goes around a sturdy fixed object. In the photos you can see the cable anchored inside the foam-lined box with that spot circled, and a close-up of the cable coming out through the side of the closed box.

Another shot shows the box held up by its cable. As an old lawman, my first thought is that a box this size goes under a jacket in two seconds. The cable won’t stop bolt cutters. It does stop the quick grab, and that’s the kind of theft I saw most.

IN THE CAR:

Dalmbox pitches it for the home, the car and travel. In the photos you can see it on a car floor with the cable run up toward the seat, closed on a floor mat, and open on a seat with the cable looped down to the frame.

Loop the cable around a seat bracket or another bolted part, not a headrest you can pull right out. Keep the box out of sight under the seat. A car runs hot in summer and cold in winter, so check on the gun and the box now and then. Check your state’s rules for carrying and storing a gun in a vehicle before you rely on any of this.

At home, the slim body slides into a drawer. If you have children in the house, use the cable there too. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

NO BATTERIES:

There’s nothing to power. Mechanical lock, no batteries, no charging cord. For a box that may sit in a car or a suitcase for months, that’s the best thing about it. Work the wheels once in a while so you know they turn smooth, and follow the instructions if you need to reset the code.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: Solid build quality for the price, a smooth combination lock, and a compact footprint that suits travel or EDC use.

Where it falls short: The interior holds less than expected, the combination mechanism can jam or be awkward to reset, and the lock is not quick enough to open in a high-stress emergency.

Who it’s for: A compact, affordable lock box for car or travel use where speed is not critical. Skip it if you need fast access in an emergency; the combination lock is slow and fiddly under stress.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The 0.9-inch inside height is the big one. After that, the short code, and the fact that the cable is the only thing holding the box in place. There’s no fire rating and no steel gauge listed, so don’t count on it for papers or for a determined thief.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you carry a slim compact or a pocket pistol, you need a box for the car, a hotel room or a suitcase, and you want to stay under $50, which is where it sat at the time of writing, with nothing to charge. Skip it if your gun is thick or wears a red dot or a light, or you want fingerprint or keypad access. Step up to a taller box for that.

Dalmbox Compact Pistol Lock Box FAQ

How big is the inside of the Dalmbox Compact Pistol Lock Box?

Dalmbox lists the inside at 9.1 by 6.1 by 0.9 inches, inside an outside of 9.4 by 6.4 by 1.8 inches. That’s shallow, so measure your pistol’s thickness and height before you order.

Does it need batteries?

No. It’s a mechanical 3-digit code lock, so there’s nothing to charge or replace. Pick a code that isn’t obvious, since three digits don’t give you many combinations.

Is there a key version?

The seller says a version with a key lock and two keys is available. Check which one you’re ordering, and keep any keys away from the box and out of children’s reach.

Can I use it in a car or when traveling?

Yes, Dalmbox pitches it for home, car and travel, and the steel cable goes around a sturdy fixed point like a seat bracket. Check your state’s rules for carrying a gun in a vehicle before you rely on it.

Is the Dalmbox water resistant?

It’s listed as water resistant, but no rating or test standard is given. Treat that as a general note, not a promise it will survive getting soaked.
