VERPROOF Keypad Gun Safe Review: An NC Firearms Instructor Looks At This Slim Bedside Box — Reviewed by Massad Ayoob, Tested by Chris Raper

In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

Not everybody who comes through my concealed carry class is buying a second gun. Plenty are buying their first, and by the time we get to storage, the money’s already gone on the pistol, the holster and the class fee. For that student, I’d rather see a fifty-dollar box screwed to the side of the nightstand than a loaded gun under the mattress.

The VERPROOF Keypad Gun Safe is one of those fifty-dollar answers. It’s a tall, narrow box with a drawer that drops open, built for one handgun on a nightstand, desk or dresser, or hung on a wall.

My verdict: a fair buy for one slim pistol in a bedroom, a guest room or a second spot in the house, as long as you confirm which version you’re ordering and anchor it to something solid.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

VERPROOF Keypad Gun Safe – Best Budget Wall-Mount Pistol Safe Under $50

HIGHLIGHT:

A slim drop-down drawer box for one handgun, with foam lining, an LED and a backup key, in the under $50 range at the time of writing.

WHICH VERSION YOU GET:

Start here, because the listing is muddy. The title calls it a keypad gun safe, and the description talks about a numeric keypad version. But the brand’s description also shows biometric versions in black and white, and the spec table lists the lock type as “Key” with a biometric fingerprint feature. The Amazon page looks like it covers more than one safe.

The photos show the same mix. One box has four round buttons on its face. Others, in black and in white, have a lit ring set in the middle of the buttons, which lines up with the biometric versions the brand describes.

Pick the variant you want on the listing, then check the title and the pictures again before you pay. If you want a fingerprint reader, don’t assume you’re getting one.

KEYPAD & BACKUP KEY:

VERPROOF says setup comes down to reading the instructions, and you’re done. It also lists a low-battery warning. What the listing doesn’t give is how many codes it holds, what happens after wrong tries or how fast the drawer opens. If those matter to you, look in the Q&A or the manual. I won’t guess at them.

A mechanical key comes in the box, and on any electronic lock that key is your way in when the batteries quit. I tell every class the same thing: the backup key doesn’t live in the drawer under the safe, and it never lives where a child can find it. Put it on your key ring or in a second locked spot.

One photo shows a hand reaching for a box mounted on a wood-paneled wall right at the edge of the bed. That’s the reach you want to practice. I tell students to work a bedside safe the way they’d work a draw: lights off, starting from lying down, five times in a row.

THE DROP-DOWN DRAWER:

The drawer is the main idea here. Instead of a lid on top, the front drops down and slides out, which the seller says makes it quick and discreet. In the photos you can see the drawer hanging open with the pistol grip pointed out toward your hand, and one shot in a dark room shows the inside lit up blue by the LED.

A grip-out angle is the right way to stage a gun for a bad night. Your hand finds the grip, not the muzzle or the slide. Just leave room in front of the box. A drawer that bumps the bed rail or the side of the nightstand on the way down is a drawer you’ll fight at 3 a.m.

INSIDE ROOM:

The inside is lined with foam. VERPROOF says it protects the gun from damage and abrasions, cuts down on rattling and holds the handgun in position so you can get to it fast. The close-ups show a gray foam cradle shaped like a channel in the drawer, and black foam on the inside wall next to the hinge pin.

There’s also an interior LED, and in a dim bedroom that helps you see what you’re reaching for. It’s a one-gun drawer, and that’s the whole design. Spare magazines and the paperwork go somewhere else.

BUILD & STEEL:

The seller says the body is “thicker steel,” and the spec table lists alloy steel. No gauge is given. There’s no pry rating, no fire rating and no water resistance listed either. At this price, I’d treat it as a box that keeps kids and casual hands out, not as protection against a man with a pry bar and ten minutes.

A slim, light box is also easy to carry off. That’s not a knock on VERPROOF, it’s just what a safe this size is. The answer is in the mounting section below.

POWER:

VERPROOF lists four AA alkaline batteries, not included, so add them to your order. There’s a low-battery warning, and the seller also mentions a USB Type-C port. The listing doesn’t say whether that port charges anything or just gives you emergency power, so read the manual before you count on it.

My habit with any electronic safe: fresh batteries on a schedule, then try both the keypad and the key after every change. And put a reminder on your phone to check the safe on the first of every month.

MOUNTING:

The spec table lists wall mounting, and the seller says it can also sit on a nightstand, desk or dresser. The back of the box in the photos shows several holes for screws. The listing doesn’t describe what hardware comes with it, so look in the box before you start drilling.

As an old lawman, my first thought on a box this size is a burglar tucking it under his jacket on the way out. Screw it into a stud or solid backing and he has to bring tools and take his time. The photos show it hung on a bare bedroom wall with a cord running out the side, and fastened to the leg of a wooden workbench with the drawer open.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

SIZE CHECK:

VERPROOF lists the outside at 7.32 inches deep, 3.7 inches wide and 14.53 inches tall. No interior size is given. With a box only 3.7 inches wide on the outside, the inside is narrow, so this is a slim-pistol safe. A wide pistol, a big optic or a weapon light may not fit.

I’d measure the gun’s length, its height from the top of the slide to the bottom of the grip, and its width at the widest point, light or optic included. If the product images don’t show the inside numbers, ask in the Q&A before you order.

The narrow footprint is the upside. In the photos it fits along the side of a nightstand and in a tight gap beside a door frame, spots where a wider box would never go.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The VERPROOF keeps a handgun both secure and quickly accessible, has a clear low-battery warning system (red glow, beeps, dimming light), and is built to hold up over years of use.

Where it falls short: The fingerprint reader can stop reading reliably over time even after re-registering, a portion of units arrive with a defective key lock or are tricky to program, and the safe can be sensitive to battery strength or type.

Who it’s for: Anyone wanting a slim, mountable keypad safe who will use fresh, strong batteries and test every access method after setup; skip it if you want fingerprint access alone for years without troubleshooting.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The version question is the big one. Keypad or fingerprint, black or white, make sure you know which one is coming. After that, it’s the narrow inside and the missing numbers: no interior size, no steel gauge, no pry or fire rating. And it’s light enough that it has to be screwed down.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you have one slim handgun, a tight budget, and a spot beside the bed, on a wall or in a guest room where a bigger box won’t fit. Skip it if you own several handguns, carry a gun with a light or a big optic, or need fire protection. Step up to a bigger box for that.

VERPROOF Keypad Gun Safe FAQ

How many handguns does the VERPROOF safe hold?

One. It’s a single-pistol design. VERPROOF gives outside dimensions of 7.32 x 3.7 x 14.53 inches and no interior size, so the inside is narrow. Check your handgun’s length, height and width, light or optic included, before you order.

What batteries does it need?

Four AA alkaline batteries, which are not included. A low-battery warning is listed, and there’s a USB Type-C port. Read the manual for what that port does, and try the lock after each battery change.

Is it a keypad or a fingerprint safe?

It depends on the version. The title says keypad, but the spec table lists a biometric fingerprint feature, and the brand description shows both keypad and biometric versions. Confirm the exact variant, color and lock type before you buy.

Can I mount it on a wall?

Yes. The spec table lists wall mounting, and the seller says it can also sit on a nightstand, desk or dresser. The listing doesn’t describe the hardware, so check the box and anchor it to a stud or solid backing.

What if the batteries die?

Use the mechanical key that comes with it. Keep it somewhere separate and secure, never inside the safe, and change the batteries on a schedule.
