In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

A lot of the long guns in eastern North Carolina sleep in the back of a bedroom closet, behind the winter coats, with nothing locking them up. When I ask a class where their deer rifle lives, that’s the answer I hear most. A tall steel locker like the INTERGREAT Long Gun Cabinet is about the cheapest step up from that closet corner that I’d still call storage.

When a student asks me whether a key-lock cabinet is enough, I ask him right back: enough for what? To keep the grandkids and the neighbor’s boy out, probably. To stop a burglar with a pry bar and twenty minutes, no.

My verdict: it’s a budget 72-inch steel locker with a plain key lock, adjustable shelves and holes to anchor it to the wall. Buy it as a lockable cabinet, not a safe, and fasten it to a stud.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

INTERGREAT Long Gun Cabinet – Best Budget Key-Lock Gun Cabinet Under $200

HIGHLIGHT:

A tall steel locker with a key lock, two backup keys, adjustable shelves and pre-drilled anti-tilt holes, and no batteries to keep up with.

OUT OF THE BOX:

INTERGREAT lists instructions and two backup keys in the box. That’s the whole list. The listing doesn’t mention wall screws or anchors, so buy fasteners for your wall before the delivery truck shows up, not after.

In the photos you can see the long shipping carton opened on the floor with the cabinet still in its packing, and another shot of it being unpacked among the cardboard. INTERGREAT lists it at 75 pounds and 72 inches tall, so get a second person for the unboxing and the stand-up. Look every panel over for shipping dents before you throw the carton away.

LOCK & BACKUP KEYS:

This is as simple as a lock gets. INTERGREAT lists the lock type as key, with two backup keys, and the listing shows no keypad, no fingerprint reader and no batteries. That’s the upside: nothing to fail, no battery to check, no code to forget.

The downside is speed, and the key itself. A key is slower than a fingerprint in the dark, so this is general storage, not a quick-grab setup for the bedroom. And a key is only as good as where you keep it. I tell every class the same thing: the key does not hang on a nail beside the cabinet, and it doesn’t ride in the kitchen junk drawer. Put one on your own key ring and hide the spare somewhere else, out of a child’s reach.

In the photos the door also has a round fitting above the keyhole. The listing calls the lock a key lock and says nothing about a keypad, so if the cabinet you get has buttons on that fitting, ask the seller what it is and what powers it.

DOOR & CLOSURE:

INTERGREAT says the doors are held shut by strong double magnets. A magnet is a closure, not a lock. It keeps the door from drifting open. The key lock is what keeps the guns in.

The listing doesn’t describe the lock mechanism: how many bolts, where they throw, or which doors and drawers it actually secures. On a cabinet this size, that’s the question I’d want answered before I paid. When yours arrives, lock it and pull on every door and drawer. If something opens without the key, now you know what it’s good for.

BUILD & STEEL:

The seller lists 0.8 mm steel with a powder coat meant to resist moisture, corrosion and rust. Let’s be plain about that number. 0.8 mm is thin, well under what dedicated gun safes usually list. It’ll keep children and casual visitors out. It won’t hold long against a man with a pry bar and a reason.

The close-up shows the textured finish along the top and the seam where the door meets the body. As an old lawman, the seam is where my eye goes first, because that’s where a pry bar goes first. No fire rating and no burglary rating are listed, so treat it as a locker and nothing more.

INSIDE ROOM:

INTERGREAT lists 21.33 cubic feet inside. That’s a lot of room, but the layout matters more than the number. The seller describes a hanging rod area, adjustable shelves and two drawers, and pitches it for clothes, accessories and office supplies too. The product title calls it a long gun cabinet with removable shelves, yet the listing never says how many rifles it holds or whether a rack or barrel rest comes with it.

INTERGREAT gun cabinet door open with a top shelf, notched rack and door pockets

The photos tell a different story from the listing text. They show a tall, narrow cabinet with a shelf up top, a notched rack below it and pockets on the inside of the door, with a row of wood-stocked rifles standing in it. I don’t see a hanging rod or drawers in them. So before you clear the floor space, ask the seller which interior ships with the listing you’re ordering.

At 72 inches tall, upright long guns have plenty of headroom. Measure your longest gun with the optic on, and the widest point of the scope, and check those against the inside before you order. With children in the house, I like ammunition locked up apart from the guns when you can manage it.

SIZE CHECK:

INTERGREAT lists the outside at 16 inches deep, 32 inches wide and 72 inches high. You need that footprint plus room for the door to swing all the way open. Measure the doorways and the stairs on the way to its final spot, too.

To my eye, the cabinet in the photos looks narrower than 32 inches. That’s one more reason to confirm with the seller which version you’re getting before you measure the closet.

MOUNTING & PLACEMENT:

The best feature on this cabinet is the anti-tilt design. INTERGREAT says pre-drilled holes in the back let you fix it to the wall so it can’t tip. A 72-inch cabinet full of rifles coming down on a child is its own kind of danger, so don’t skip this step. Fasten into studs or masonry, not drywall alone, with screws you bought for your wall, since the listing doesn’t mention any.

At 75 pounds, it’s light for what it holds. As an old lawman, my first thought on a light cabinet is the thief who tips it onto a hand truck and leaves with the guns still inside. Anchored to the wall, he has to work for it.

A basement or spare room works, but stay out of damp spots and toss a few desiccant packs inside to fight rust. The photos show it standing in a cluttered storage area and in a carpeted bedroom corner, which is about where most folks put one.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

POWER:

There isn’t any. The lock is a key, and the listing mentions no electronics, lights or alarms. That means no batteries to change, and it also means no interior light, no alarm and no access log. If you want those, look at an electronic cabinet.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The INTERGREAT Long Gun Cabinet is good value, holding about three long guns with attachments plus two handguns in the door pouches. Heavy-gauge steel carries a solid powder coat, and the mounting holes line up well with wall studs for anchoring.

Where it falls short: This is a locking cabinet, not a fire-rated safe, and it offers no fire protection. Assembly is required even though the listing does not always say so, and some units arrive with shipping dents or a sticking door.

Who it’s for: An affordable cabinet for a few long guns and handguns where the goal is child safety rather than theft or fire protection.

WHAT TO WATCH:

Three things. The steel is thin at a listed 0.8 mm. The doors are held by magnets, and the listing doesn’t say what the lock secures. And the listing text and the photos don’t line up neatly, so confirm the interior, the lock and the width before you order. With no fire rating, don’t store papers in it you can’t replace.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you want a large, lockable steel cabinet for a basement or spare room, you’re fine with a key, and you’ll anchor it to the wall. At the time of writing it sat in the $100 to $200 range. Skip it if you want fast electronic access, heavier steel, or a rated safe for an insurance policy. Step up to a real gun safe for that.

INTERGREAT Long Gun Cabinet FAQ

Is the INTERGREAT long gun cabinet a real gun safe?

No. It’s a lockable steel cabinet with a key lock. The seller lists 0.8 mm steel and no fire or burglary rating. It keeps children and casual visitors out, but it isn’t a vault.

How many rifles fit in the INTERGREAT cabinet?

INTERGREAT doesn’t list a rifle count. It lists 72 x 32 x 16 inches and 21.33 cubic feet, with a hanging rod area, adjustable shelves and two drawers. Ask the seller which interior and rack ship before you count on it holding your guns.

Does the INTERGREAT cabinet have an electronic lock?

The listing says key, with two backup keys. There are no batteries to maintain, but a key is slower than a fingerprint or keypad. If the unit you receive shows a keypad, ask the seller what it is and what powers it.

Can the INTERGREAT cabinet be anchored to a wall?

Yes. The seller says pre-drilled holes in the back let you mount it to the wall as an anti-tilt measure. Screws aren’t listed in the box, so buy fasteners suited to your wall and hit a stud.

Where should I keep the backup keys?

Apart from the cabinet and from each other: one on your key ring, the spare in a separate secure spot out of children’s reach. Make sure both keys work the day it arrives.
