This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.
If you want one home safe for deeds, passports, a little cash and a handgun, start with the Master Lock STW123GTCML Premium 2-Hour Fire and Water Safe: Master Lock lists a UL classification for 2 hours at up to 1850°F, ETL-verified water resistance in 8 inches of water for 24 hours, a UL impact classification for a 15-foot drop, four live-locking bolts and bolt-down hardware in the box. If you want a key backup you can count on when the batteries die, the Honeywell 2605 pairs the same 2-hour, 1850°F UL rating with a digital lock and two override keys.
When I teach the storage part of my concealed carry class, somebody always asks whether a fire safe from the home store is a gun safe. The honest answer is “partly.” A good fire and water safe protects papers and a handgun from heat, flood and a casual grab. It is not a burglary safe, and it needs to be bolted down. The seven picks below are chosen with that in mind.
FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

How we chose
We did not burn or drown these safes. This guide is built from each maker’s product page, the fire and water ratings they state and who verified them, and what students ask me about home storage. I weighted four things: an independent fire rating (UL classification, not just “fire resistant”), an independent water rating, how the door locks and whether there is a non-electronic backup, and whether the safe can be bolted down. I left out models the makers now list as discontinued, and I flag every spec a page leaves blank.
One thing to know before the picks: fire ratings on safes like these describe how long the inside stays cool enough to protect paper. They are not burglary ratings. A fire safe slows a smash-and-grab thief only if it is heavy and bolted to the floor.
1. Master Lock STW123GTCML – Best Overall Home Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
A 2-hour UL fire rating, ETL water rating, UL drop rating and bolt-down hardware in one 1.2 cubic foot safe.
FIRE & WATER:
Master Lock lists a UL classification to protect contents for 2 hours at up to 1850°F, ETL verification for up to 8 inches of water for up to 24 hours, and a UL classification to withstand impact from a 15-foot fall. That last one matters in a two-story house, where a safe upstairs can come through the floor in a bad fire.
DOOR & LOCK:
Four steel live-locking bolts and a pry-resistant hinge bar, behind a battery-powered keypad with a programmable 5-digit code. Master Lock’s page doesn’t clearly describe a backup key on this model, so confirm what the box includes and how a dead battery is handled before you load it.
INSIDE ROOM:
Master Lock gives the interior as 13.8 by 12.6 by 11.9 inches and the exterior as 17.8 by 16.3 by 19.3 inches. That fits letter-size folders, a passport pouch and a full-size handgun in a holster or a padded case. At 128.2 pounds, it’s heavy enough that bolting it down is a real deterrent, and Master Lock includes the bolt-down hardware.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: 2-hour UL fire rating; ETL water rating; UL impact rating; bolt-down hardware included; limited lifetime warranty per Master Lock
- Cons: backup key not clearly documented; heavy to move upstairs

2. Honeywell 2605 – Best Home Safe With a Backup Key
HIGHLIGHT:
A 2-hour UL fire rating at 1850°F and a digital lock backed by two override keys.
FIRE & WATER:
The listing gives a UL classification for 2 hours at up to 1850°F and water protection for up to 8 hours, including fully submerged. Eight hours is shorter than the 24-hour ETL ratings on the SentrySafe and Master Lock picks, so if you live in a flood zone, weigh that.
DOOR & LOCK:
Two steel live-locking bolts and two steel dead bolts, a programmable digital lock and two override keys. That override key is why this safe is here. A keypad with no key backup turns into a paperweight the night the battery quits. Keep the keys away from the safe and away from children.
INSIDE ROOM & MOUNTING:
The interior is listed at 12.7 by 9.8 by 12.4 inches, 0.9 cubic foot, inside a 113-pound body with pre-drilled mounting holes and hardware. Honeywell’s warranty is listed as a 7-year limited warranty.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: 2-hour UL fire rating; two override keys; mounting hardware; 7-year limited warranty
- Cons: 0.9 cubic foot is tight for a full-size pistol plus files; 8-hour water rating
3. SentrySafe SFW123GDC – Best Value 1.2 Cubic Foot Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
The same interior size as our top pick with a 1-hour UL fire rating and a 24-hour ETL water rating.
FIRE & WATER:
SentrySafe lists a UL classification for 1 hour at up to 1700°F and ETL verification for up to 8 inches of water for up to 24 hours. One hour is the most common rating on home fire safes; if you live far out in the county, a long way from the fire station, the 2-hour picks above buy more margin.
DOOR & LOCK:
SentrySafe describes large 1-inch live-locking bolts and a pry-resistant hinge bar behind a programmable 5-digit keypad. Its page lists bolt-down hardware as a feature and also sells a separate bolt-down kit for SF and SFW models, so check what is in your box.
INSIDE ROOM:
Interior 13.8 by 12.6 by 11.9 inches, exterior 17.8 by 16.3 by 19.3 inches, weight 86.69 pounds per SentrySafe. That is lighter than the Master Lock version of the same size, which is easier on a closet floor and easier for a thief, so bolt it down.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: roomy 1.23 cu ft interior; 1-hour UL fire and 24-hour ETL water ratings; pry-resistant hinge bar
- Cons: 1-hour rather than 2-hour fire rating; bolt-down kit may be sold separately

4. Master Lock STW205GYCML – Best Large Home Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
Two cubic feet, six live-locking bolts and the same 2-hour UL and 24-hour ETL ratings as our top pick.
INSIDE ROOM:
Master Lock gives the interior as 19.6 by 14.8 by 11.9 inches. That is tall enough for a shelf of document boxes plus two handguns in cases, or a handgun and a camera bag. It’s still too short for any long gun, so rifles and shotguns go in a rifle safe or a fireproof gun safe.
DOOR & LOCK:
Six steel live-locking bolts, a pry-resistant hinge bar, a programmable 5-digit keypad, bolt-down hardware included, and the 15-foot UL impact rating. At 192.2 pounds you’ll want a helper and a dolly, and a ground-floor spot over a slab if you can manage it.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: 2.0 cu ft; six bolts; 2-hour UL fire, ETL water and UL impact ratings; bolt-down hardware
- Cons: 192 pounds to move; backup key not clearly documented

5. SentrySafe FPW082ES – Best Compact Home Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
A 0.81 cubic foot fire and water safe at 55 pounds that fits in a closet corner.
FIRE & WATER:
SentrySafe lists a UL classification for 1 hour at up to 1700°F and ETL verification for up to 5 inches of water for 24 hours. SentrySafe names it as the replacement for the discontinued SFW082ET.
DOOR & INSIDE ROOM:
Three 1-inch automatic steel locking bolts with an audible lock confirmation, a pry-resistant hinge bar and a 5-digit keypad. The interior is 9.6 by 12.4 by 11.5 inches. A compact pistol in a soft case and a stack of documents fit; a full-size pistol with a light gets tight. SentrySafe sells the bolt-down kit for FP and FPW models as an accessory.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: compact; 1-hour UL fire rating; audible bolt confirmation; easy to carry upstairs
- Cons: 55 pounds is easy to carry off unless bolted down; 5-inch water rating

6. Liberty Home 8 – Best Heavy-Duty Home Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
A 227-pound, 14-gauge steel home safe with five locking bars and a 60-minute fire rating.
BUILD:
This is a step up from the fire boxes above. Liberty lists 14-gauge steel, five Solid State locking bars, a 60-minute fire rating and its own Security Level 3, and says the Home series is made in the USA with American and global parts. Liberty’s fire rating is its own residential rating, not a UL classification, so compare it with that in mind.
INSIDE ROOM:
Interior 26 by 19.5 by 13.5 inches, about 3.96 cubic feet, inside a body 30.125 inches tall. Liberty notes it has no long-gun storage, so think of it as a home safe for several handguns, documents and valuables. It needs a 22-inch doorway and a solid floor.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: 14-gauge steel; five locking bars; nearly 4 cu ft inside; heavy enough to stay put once anchored
- Cons: fire rating is Liberty’s own, not UL; no water rating listed; a professional delivery job

7. SentrySafe CHW20221 Fire/Water Chest – Best for Documents Only
HIGHLIGHT:
A 20-pound document chest with a UL half-hour fire rating and ETL flood protection up to 72 hours.
WHAT IT IS FOR:
SentrySafe lists a UL classification for 1/2 hour at up to 1550°F, ETL-verified flood protection up to 72 hours, a resin case and a tubular key lock. The interior is 4.4 by 12.8 by 8.5 inches. This is where the birth certificates, titles and your concealed handgun permit paperwork go.
WHAT IT IS NOT:
It is not a gun safe. At 20.4 pounds with a carry handle, a thief walks out with it under one arm. Keep it for papers, put it somewhere unremarkable, and keep the gun in something that bolts down.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: UL fire and ETL flood ratings; light; inexpensive way to protect papers
- Cons: no theft protection; half-hour fire rating; not for firearms

How to choose the best home safe
Read who verified the fire rating
“UL Classified” means Underwriters Laboratories tested the design to a time and temperature. “ETL Verified” means Intertek verified a claim, usually the water rating. A rating with no testing body named is the maker’s own claim. Look for the hours, the temperature and the name of the lab, and compare like with like.
Fire safe is not burglary safe
Fire safes are built to insulate, not to stand up to a pry bar for long. Their best defense against theft is weight plus anchoring. Bolt the safe to a slab or to the floor framing with the hardware the maker supplies; our guide on how to bolt down a gun safe walks through it. Put it in a closet or corner that doesn’t give a thief room to swing a bar.
Watch the humidity if you store a gun inside
The insulation in many fire safes holds moisture, and a sealed door keeps it in. That is fine for paper and hard on a blued slide. Keep the gun lightly oiled, add a rechargeable desiccant canister, and open the safe and look at the gun every few weeks. If you see surface rust starting, don’t wait.
Size for what you own, plus room
Lay out what will go inside, measure the interior, not the exterior, and add room to grow. Our what size gun safe do I need guide helps. If the safe is mostly for a bedside handgun, a quick-access box is the better tool; see our nightstand gun safe picks.
Keypad, dial or key
Keypads are quick but depend on batteries; change them on a schedule and know where the backup is. A model with override keys, like the Honeywell 2605, covers the dead-battery night. Our biometric vs keypad comparison covers the tradeoffs.
Best Home Safe FAQ
What is the best home safe for documents and a handgun?
The Master Lock STW123GTCML is our top pick: a UL 2-hour fire rating at 1850°F, an ETL water rating, a UL impact rating, four live-locking bolts and bolt-down hardware, with room for files and a full-size handgun. The Honeywell 2605 is the pick if you want override keys as a backup.
Is a fireproof safe also a gun safe?
Only partly. A fire and water safe protects a handgun from heat and flood and keeps casual hands out, but it is not built to resist a determined burglar. Bolt it down and keep the gun lightly oiled because fire insulation can hold moisture.
What does UL 1 hour at 1700°F mean?
It means Underwriters Laboratories classified the safe to protect its contents for one hour when the outside reaches up to 1700°F. A 2-hour rating at 1850°F gives more time in a longer or hotter fire.
Should I bolt down a home safe?
Yes. A 55- to 130-pound fire safe can be carried out by one or two people. Bolting it to the slab or floor framing is the single biggest step you can take against theft.
Where should I put a home safe?
On the ground floor over a concrete slab if you can, in a closet or corner where a thief has no room to swing a pry bar, and away from where a flood would pool first. Bolt it down, and don’t put it in the garage, where heat, humidity and a quick exit all work against you.
