This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.
For most people the best IWB holster is the Vedder LightTuck, a made-to-order Kydex holster with adjustable retention, cant and ride height and a tuckable clip. If you want a molded Kydex holster with a built-in inward cant at a lower cost, the Bravo Concealment Torsion is the value pick, and if you carry in front of the hip, the Tier 1 Concealed Axis Elite is made for appendix.
Inside-the-waistband carry is where most of my students end up, because it hides a real carry gun under an ordinary shirt. It also asks more of the holster than any other method: it has to ride against your body all day, cover the trigger, stay open for reholstering and stay anchored when the gun comes out. The eight picks below are sorted by what they do best.
FYI, makers update fit lists often. Confirm your exact pistol, optic and light on the maker’s page before you order.

How we chose
We did not lab-test these holsters. We picked them from maker specifications and fit lists, weighed against the checklist I use with students: the holster must cover the trigger guard, keep its shape after the draw, anchor firmly to a gun belt and offer enough adjustment to conceal a real carry gun.
We included one pick for each common IWB need: an all-round custom Kydex, a value Kydex, an appendix rig, a light-bearing option, a vented holster for heat, two hybrids and an all-leather choice.
1. Vedder LightTuck – Best Overall IWB
HIGHLIGHT:
Made to order, and it adjusts in every direction that matters.
BUILD:
Vedder molds the LightTuck from .080-inch Kydex for the specific pistol you order and includes full sight channels. The spring-steel clip tucks, so you can wear a shirt tucked over the holster, and it comes in sizes for 1.5-inch and 1.75-inch belts.
ADJUSTMENT:
Retention adjusts from tight to loose, the clip gives 30 degrees of forward or reverse cant, and there are three ride heights. That flexibility is why it sits at the top: a student can start at 4 o’clock, try appendix and change the setup without buying another holster. An optional claw, sold separately, rotates the grip in toward the body.
BACKING:
Vedder offers a lifetime warranty, a 30-day money-back guarantee and says it ships handmade orders in five to seven business days.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: fully adjustable; tuckable clip; built for your pistol; lifetime warranty
- Cons: made to order, so there is a wait; claw is extra

2. Bravo Concealment Torsion – Best Value Kydex IWB
HIGHLIGHT:
An integrated 10-degree inward cant pulls the grip toward your body.
BUILD:
Bravo Concealment offers the Torsion in Kydex and polymer, molded in-house to a specific pistol with CAD and CNC tooling. Bravo says the gun locks in with no movement and gives an audible click when you reholster, which is a good cue for a new carrier who is still learning to do it slowly.
CONCEALMENT:
The Torsion’s selling point is a built-in 10-degree inward cant, meant to tuck the grip in against your side, which is where most IWB holsters print. If printing is your problem, my guide to how to stop printing explains why grip angle matters more than barrel length.
BACKING:
Bravo backs it with an unlimited lifetime warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Light-bearing versions are sold for some pistols.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: molded fit with an audible click; inward cant for concealment; lifetime warranty; lower cost than custom
- Cons: fewer adjustments than a custom holster; check your pistol is on the fit list

3. Tier 1 Concealed Axis Elite – Best Appendix IWB
HIGHLIGHT:
Gun and spare magazine on one appendix rig that flexes as you move.
DESIGN:
Tier 1 joins the pistol pocket and a magazine carrier with military-grade shock cord, so each half flexes on its own when you sit or bend. The magazine rides canted, and there is a concealment ridge on the magazine side and a re-holster ramp. Tier 1 says it clears optics and suppressor-height sights up to .380 inch.
APPENDIX HABITS:
Appendix carry hides well and draws fast, but the muzzle points at you while you reholster. I teach students to look the gun in and clear the shirt first. My appendix carry guide covers the setup and the habits. Tier 1 states a lifetime warranty.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: purpose-built for appendix; spare magazine attached; optic clearance; lifetime warranty
- Cons: appendix only; wider than a single holster

4. PHLster Floodlight 2 – Best Light-Bearing IWB
HIGHLIGHT:
It indexes on the light, so one holster fits many pistols.
FIT:
PHLster molds the Floodlight 2 to the light instead of the pistol. One version takes the SureFire X300U-A, U-B and U-T; the other takes the Streamlight TLR-1, TLR-1S, TLR-1 HL and TLR-1 HP. Lights not on PHLster’s list, such as TLR-7 models, are not supported, and the two versions are not interchangeable.
SETUP:
It carries appendix or strong side, swaps to left hand by moving hardware, and adjusts retention at two points. Two 1.5-inch DCC steel clips are included, PHLster says it is made in the USA, and it carries a lifetime warranty against defects.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: fits many pistols with a supported light; ambidextrous; adjustable retention; lifetime warranty
- Cons: supported lights only; a light makes the gun longer and harder to hide on a small frame

5. StealthGear VentCore 2.0 – Best Ventilated IWB for Hot Weather
HIGHLIGHT:
A vented core behind moisture-wicking mesh instead of a solid backer.
BUILD:
StealthGear replaces the solid backer with a laser-cut core behind a moisture-wicking performance mesh, and says the 2.0 design moves more air than the original. Each shell is built for one pistol with full trigger-guard coverage, and the cut accommodates red dots, suppressor-height sights and threaded barrels. Light-bearing versions are available.
FIT AND MAKE:
The Mini platform listed here suits compact and subcompact pistols on the strong side with an adjustable 15-degree cant. StealthGear says it is hand-built in the USA with a lead time of a week or two, and a 2.0 shell can move to another 2.0 platform for the same pistol.
WHO IT’S FOR:
Carolina summers are hard on leather and sweat-soaked backers. If you carry in the heat, a vented backer is worth a look.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: breathes better than solid backers; optic and threaded-barrel cut; swappable shells
- Cons: wider than bare Kydex; build lead time

6. CrossBreed SuperTuck – Best Leather-Backed Hybrid
HIGHLIGHT:
A broad leather backer that spreads the weight of a heavier gun.
BUILD:
CrossBreed mounts a hand-molded Kydex pocket on a premium leather backer in cowhide, horsehide or Founder’s Leather. SnapLok steel clips adjust cant and ride height, and a combat cut is optional.
TRIAL AND WARRANTY:
CrossBreed offers a two-week try-it-free guarantee (not on custom shop items) and a lifetime warranty. Hybrids are wider than Kydex-only holsters, so size your pants accordingly; my Kydex vs leather vs hybrid guide explains the trade.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: spreads weight; adjustable; two-week trial; lifetime warranty
- Cons: wider footprint; leather needs care

7. Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.5 – Best Hybrid With a Test-Drive Period
HIGHLIGHT:
A four-layer backer with a spring-steel core and a 30-day test drive.
BUILD:
Alien Gear lists four backer layers: CoolVent neoprene against the body, a ballistic nylon layer, a spring steel core for structure and easier reholstering, and a textured elastomer surface. The Kydex shell is molded for your pistol and retention is adjustable.
ADJUSTMENT:
Tool-less belt clips change ride height and cant. Alien Gear says the holster is designed and built in Idaho and offers a 30-day test drive, which takes some of the guesswork out of buying your first hybrid.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: spring-steel core keeps the mouth open; breathable neoprene; tool-less adjustment; 30-day test drive
- Cons: wider than Kydex; neoprene can hold heat under heavy clothing

8. Galco Stow-N-Go – Best All-Leather IWB
HIGHLIGHT:
Steerhide with a metal-reinforced mouth that stays open.
BUILD:
Galco makes the Stow-N-Go from premium center-cut steerhide with a high ride, neutral cant and a metal-reinforced mouth. An injection-molded polymer clip fits belts up to 1.75 inches. Give new leather a proper break-in before you carry it.
WHO IT’S FOR:
Carriers who like leather and want a simple, low-cost holster from an established maker. It has no cant or retention adjustment, so it works best on a stiff gun belt.
PROS & CONS:
- Pros: established maker; reinforced mouth; low cost; quiet leather
- Cons: no adjustments; single clip

How to choose the best IWB holster
Kydex, hybrid or leather
Kydex is thin and keeps its shape; hybrids add a backer for comfort but are wider; leather is quiet but needs care and a reinforced mouth. My material comparison goes deeper.
Strong side or appendix
Strong-side at 3 to 5 o’clock is where most people start; my carry positions guide shows each spot. Appendix conceals well and is fast, but demands careful reholstering. My IWB vs OWB guide helps if you are still deciding whether to carry inside at all.
Clips and claws
Two clips resist rotation better than one, tuckable clips let you tuck in a shirt, and a claw or wing pushes the grip in to stop printing. Match clip size to your belt width.
Size your pants
An IWB holster takes up room inside the waistband. Most people need their trousers an inch or so larger in the waist than usual. A tight waistband makes any holster uncomfortable. My holster fit and sizing guide covers the details.
The belt
A stiff, purpose-built gun belt is the most overlooked part of the system. See my gun belt guide.
Best IWB Holster FAQ
What is the most concealable IWB holster?
A rigid Kydex holster with adjustable cant and a claw, such as the Vedder LightTuck or the Bravo Concealment Torsion with its built-in inward cant, usually hides best because it keeps the grip tucked against your body.
Is a hybrid IWB more comfortable than Kydex?
Often, yes. A leather or neoprene backer spreads the gun’s weight over a wider area. The trade-off is a wider footprint and, for leather, more care. Try one with a trial period like the CrossBreed SuperTuck or Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.5.
Can I use the same IWB holster for appendix and strong side?
Some, yes. The Vedder LightTuck is listed for strong side, appendix and cross draw, and the PHLster Floodlight 2 works appendix or strong side. Purpose-built appendix rigs like the Tier 1 Axis Elite are appendix only.
Do I need a special belt for IWB carry?
Yes. A stiff gun belt keeps the holster upright and the gun close to your body. A soft dress belt lets the gun sag and print.
How do I practice drawing from an IWB holster?
Start slow with an unloaded, verified-empty pistol and no ammunition in the room: clear the garment, grip, draw, and reholster while looking the gun in. My draw drills from concealment lay out a weekly routine.
