In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.
Students on a tight budget ask me whether a lock box under fifty dollars is worth having. My answer never changes: a cheap box that’s screwed down and used every night beats a fancy one still sitting in the carton.
The BE-TECH Biometric Pistol Lock Box is one of those cheap boxes. It’s flat, it opens by fingerprint, keypad or key, and it runs on four AA batteries you buy yourself.
My verdict: a lot of features for the money on paper, sized for a compact or standard pistol, as long as you screw it down and keep fresh batteries in it.
FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

BE-TECH Biometric Pistol Lock Box – Best Budget Fingerprint Gun Box Under $50
HIGHLIGHT:
Fingerprint, a 4-to-8-digit keypad and two backup keys on a box listed under $50.
OUT OF THE BOX:
BE-TECH lists the safe, two manual keys, two mounting screws and a user manual. Batteries aren’t included, so buy four good AA cells before it shows up. The seller’s text also mentions a heavy-duty steel cable, but the box list doesn’t name one. See whether you got one before you plan around it.
In the photos you can see the two keys on a ring. Decide where each one is going to live before you load a gun, not after.

FRONT PANEL & FINGERPRINT READER:
BE-TECH says the reader responds in 0.1 second and stores up to 50 fingerprints. Take both numbers as the maker’s claims. The listing’s own Q&A says the scanner uses a self-learning algorithm and recommends registering the same finger at several angles.
That’s the same thing I teach for every biometric safe: flat, tipped up and rolled a little each way. Wet, dry or dirty fingers read poorly, and nobody’s hand lands at 3 a.m. the way it did at setup. The close-up shows a finger on the reader with the ring lit green, the box sitting in an open drawer.

KEYPAD & BACKUP KEY:
The keypad takes a 4- to 8-digit code, and BE-TECH lists what it calls an anti-peep virtual passcode function. I’d use more than four digits. There’s also a lockout alarm after repeated wrong tries, which slows down a guesser, and a silent mode so you can open it at night without beeps.
The key lock hides under an oval cover on the right end of the front panel. The close-up shows that cover slid aside to uncover the keyhole. One key goes on your key ring and the other goes in a second locked spot. Neither one lives in the drawer with the safe.

SETUP & THE MANUAL:
In the photos you can see pages from the user manual covering user codes and fingerprints, turning the sound off and on, the low-battery warning, the USB-C power backup and the wrong-try lockout, plus two ways to reset the box. Read all of it before you enroll the first print.

Two habits I preach for any electronic box. Set your own code the first day, whatever it shipped with. And keep the manual where you can find it, because a reset done from memory is usually a reset done wrong.

INSIDE ROOM:
BE-TECH lists the inside at 10.2 inches long, 7 wide and 2.9 high. The seller says it holds two handguns about the size of a 9mm Glock 19, a P365 or a 1911, or one full-size handgun with spare magazines and a red dot sight. Those are the seller’s examples, so measure your own gun at its longest, widest and tallest points.

Height is the limit at 2.9 inches. An extended magazine, a weapon light or a tall optic may keep the lid from closing, and every spare magazine you add eats room fast. In the photos you can see egg-crate foam in the lid and on the floor. The listing doesn’t describe the padding, so see whether any of it comes out if you need the space.

BE-TECH also lists an automatic interior LED light, so you can see what’s inside without lighting up the whole room.
BUILD & STEEL:
BE-TECH lists high-tensile alloy steel with a precision-fit anti-pry edge, plus an alarm system, anti-theft design, scratch resistance and a sensor light. No steel gauge, no lock description and no independent rating come with it, so read those as the seller’s claims.
The listed weight is 8.3 pounds. That’s heavier than a plastic case, but as an old lawman, my first thought is still that a burglar can carry it out under one arm. No fire rating or waterproofing is claimed either, so keep papers you can’t replace somewhere else.
In the photos you can see it closed: a row of four buttons, the round fingerprint reader, the BE-TECH logo and the oval key cover, all along the front edge.

POWER:
Four AA batteries, not included. BE-TECH says its low-power circuit lasts up to six months of steady use and gives a low-battery alert. How often you open it, the temperature and the batteries you pick will all move that number.
The seller also mentions a USB-C emergency power option for a dead battery, and the close-up shows a small USB port beside the key lock. Learn how it works from the manual before you need it. Then put a battery check on your phone for the first of every month, and try the key after setup.

MOUNTING:
The box has two pre-drilled holes, BE-TECH includes two screws, and the seller lists it as a floor mount. Use them. A nightstand drawer is the usual home, and screwing the base down turns a grab-and-go into a job that takes tools and time.

In the photos you can see it sitting in open drawers, closed in one and lit up in another. A thin drawer bottom won’t hold a screw the way a solid shelf will, so look at what you’re screwing into.

For a vehicle, keep it out of sight and anchored, and check the manual for heat guidance. If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:
Where it earns its keep: Thick metal in a well-built housing, an LED that lights on opening, room for two mid-size pistols, fingerprint access that works well once enrolled, and backup keys in the box.
Where it falls short: Fingerprint and code programming can be fiddly on the first try, the AA batteries can die and lock you out until you reach for the key, and the battery compartment is stiff to open when new.
Who it’s for: A sturdy multi-pistol box with key backup for anyone willing to follow the setup instructions carefully. Skip it if you want instant out-of-the-box setup; initial fingerprint programming takes patience.
WHAT TO WATCH:
The 2.9-inch inside height, the batteries you have to buy, and the cable that’s in the seller’s text but not on the box list. No fire rating or certification is listed. For the money those are fair trades, as long as you know them going in.
WHO SHOULD BUY IT:
Buy it if you want a bedside or drawer box for a compact or standard pistol, you’ll screw it down, and you want to stay under fifty dollars. At the time of writing it sat in the under $50 range. Skip it if your gun wears a light or a tall optic, or you need fire protection or a rated safe. Step up to a heavier bolt-down box for that.

BE-TECH Biometric Pistol Lock Box FAQ
Will my handgun fit in the BE-TECH Biometric Pistol Lock Box?
The seller lists the inside at 10.2 inches long, 7 wide and 2.9 high, and names compact and full-size pistols as examples. Height is the limit, so measure your gun at its tallest point, optic, light and extended magazine included.
What batteries does the BE-TECH safe use?
Four AA batteries, not included. BE-TECH claims up to six months of life and a low-battery alert. Keep spares and a backup key handy, and read the manual for the USB-C emergency power option.
How do I mount the BE-TECH lock box?
Use the two pre-drilled holes and the two included screws, into a solid surface. The seller’s text mentions a steel cable, but the box list doesn’t, so confirm that before you count on one.
What if the fingerprint reader doesn’t work?
Use the 4-to-8-digit keypad, and then the keys. A lockout alarm kicks in after repeated wrong tries, so don’t keep guessing. Keep a key where you can reach it and children can’t.
Is the BE-TECH lock box fireproof?
No fire rating or waterproofing is claimed, so don’t count on it to protect papers or valuables from a fire or a flood.
