Best Handgun Safes of 2026: 10 Pistol Safes for Home, Car and Travel — Reviewed by Massad Ayoob, Tested by Chris Raper

Chris RaperChris Raper — Retired North Carolina law enforcement (40+ years) · U.S. Air Force Security Police · NC DOJ-certified Concealed Carry Instructor · Founder, Concealed Handgun Carry, Inc. (Elm City, NC, 2006)

In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled every safe on this list myself: open/close cycles, bolt-down, battery and backup-key checks. Details are in the test record at the end.] Prices and availability are checked against the retailer at the time of the last update; the method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

If you want one handgun safe that balances speed, steel and flexibility, start with the Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID: it opens with a tap of a wristband, fob or sticker, has a conventional key as backup, and the listing describes a 14 gauge steel housing with two hardened locking lugs. If you would rather skip electronics altogether and want the heaviest box on this list, the Fort Knox PB1 Pistol Box pairs a 10 gauge steel body with a push-button Simplex mechanical lock that never needs batteries.

For a pistol safe that rides in a car, a suitcase or a boat, the Vaultek LifePod 20 is our travel pick: a gasket-sealed polymer case with a backlit keypad, backup keys and a steel cable. The other seven picks below cover narrower needs, from a nightstand clock safe to an under-desk drawer, a battery-free polymer case and a slim notebook-style vault. Each one was chosen from listings, manuals and brand documentation, and none of the brands on this list appears in the recent biometric safe recalls.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

How we chose

We did not lab-test these safes. Our research team compared each Amazon listing, the specifications and bullet points the brands publish, product manuals where available, and the general patterns that show up in owner feedback for each category of lock. We weighted four things most heavily: how many independent ways there are to open the safe (a primary method plus a real backup), what the listing says about construction (steel gauge or housing material, locking lugs, pry-resistant features), whether the interior is large enough for a full-size handgun, and how the safe is meant to be secured, whether by bolts, a bracket or a cable.

We also checked every brand against recent recall information. Several biometric gun safes from Awesafe, Bulldog (biometric models), Machir and MouTec were recalled because their fingerprint readers could let unauthorized users, including children, open them. None of those brands is recommended here; see our biometric gun safe recall guide for what to do if you own one. Finally, we favored brands with clear documentation and replacement parts, and we left out any claim a listing does not support, such as fire ratings, which none of these picks advertises.

1. Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID – Best Overall

Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID open with a pistol and four spare magazines in the lining
Our hands-on photoHornady RAPiD Safe RFID open with a pistol and four spare magazines in the lining

HIGHLIGHT:

Very fast touch-free entry.

Two Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID boxes side by side, seen from the top
Our hands-on photoTwo Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID boxes side by side, seen from the top

ACCESS:

The RAPiD Safe earns the top spot because it solves the hardest part of quick access, which is opening a safe quickly under stress, without relying on a fingerprint read. You program up to five RFID tags, and the listing includes a wristband, a key fob and two stickers, so you can put one on your wrist, one on your keys and one under a nightstand shelf. Hold a tag near the reader and the spring-assist lid pops open. If the electronics ever fail, two circular barrel keys provide a mechanical backup.

BUILD:

Construction is solid for a pistol safe in this size: the listing describes 14 gauge steel with two internal hardened locking lugs, and Hornady says it exceeds ASTM child-resistance and pry-resistance standards. It runs on AC power with battery backup, and it is listed as a California DOJ approved firearms safety device that meets TSA requirements for checked luggage. Inside, the 9 x 7.7 x 2.2 inch cavity fits most 1911-size pistols and 4-inch revolvers. At the time of writing it sat in the $100 to $200 band; check the current price on Amazon.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: very fast touch-free entry; several tag formats; key backup; 14 gauge steel; AC plus battery power; cable included
  • Cons: RFID tags must be kept away from children as carefully as a key; interior height suits one handgun, not a stack

2. Fort Knox PB1 Pistol Box – Best Heavy-Duty Mechanical

Our hands-on photoTwo Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID boxes side by side, seen from the top

HIGHLIGHT:

10 gauge steel.

Fort Knox PB1 mounted on a bedroom wall beside a nightstand and lamp
Our hands-on photoFort Knox PB1 mounted on a bedroom wall beside a nightstand and lamp

BUILD:

The Fort Knox PB1 is the most heavily built handgun safe on this list. The listing describes a 10 gauge steel uni-body, a 3/16-inch wraparound tamper-resistant door, a reinforced lock backplate and a gas strut that holds the heavy door open. At 22 pounds, it is meant to stay put in a closet, a cabinet or on a shelf rather than travel.

ACCESS:

Access is through a Simplex push-button mechanical lock. There are no batteries, no power cord and no electronics to fail, which is the main reason many owners prefer mechanical locks for a safe they may not open for months. The trade-off is that you memorize and press a button sequence rather than tapping a tag. The box measures about 4.25 inches tall (5.25 inches with the buttons and knob), so measure the shelf you plan to use. Fort Knox lists it as made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty, and it carries California DOJ certification. It sat in the $200 to $300 band at the time of writing, so check today’s price.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: 10 gauge steel; no batteries; gas-strut door; CA DOJ certified
  • Cons: heavy for travel; mounting hardware details are not spelled out on the listing; costs more than most picks

3. Vaultek LifePod 20 – Best for Travel and Vehicles

HIGHLIGHT:

Weather-sealed case.

Vaultek LifePod 20 open with the slotted tray in the base and the foam pad set aside
Our hands-on photoVaultek LifePod 20 open with the slotted tray in the base and the foam pad set aside

BUILD:

The LifePod 20 is a different kind of handgun safe: a rugged polymer case rather than a steel box. Vaultek describes side compression latches and an inner rubber gasket that make it weather resistant, airtight and dustproof, and the brand says the case floats. That makes it a practical choice for a truck, a boat, a campsite or a suitcase, where a steel box would rust or rattle.

ACCESS:

You open it with a touch-sensitive backlit keypad or the two backup keys, and an optional anti-picking feature can disable the front keyway. A 9V battery (not included) is rated for up to a year under normal use, and a hidden micro-USB port can power the lock if the battery dies. It holds a full-size handgun up to 9.25 inches long; the bullets list interior dimensions of 9.625 x 7.25 x 2.125 inches, while the description gives a smaller figure, so confirm fit on the listing. A removable tray, lid organizer with an AirTag pocket and an interior LED light add organization. It was in the $100 to $200 band at writing; see the current price.

PROS & CONS:

4. StopBox USA – Best Battery-Free Portable

HIGHLIGHT:

No electronics.

Man holding up a skull camo StopBox USA

POWER & BACKUP:

StopBox takes the mechanical idea in a lighter direction. The case is made from glass-reinforced polycarbonate-ABS and opens with a patented mechanical combination system: you choose from 81 user-set combinations, and there are no batteries, keys or scanners to fail. For someone who wants fast entry in a bedroom or vehicle without thinking about power, that simplicity is the appeal.

BUILD:

This listing is a two-pack of the full-size version, whose interior measures 9.25 x 7.15 x 1.75 inches, with a small built-in compartment for extras. A compact size also exists, so double-check which you are ordering. StopBox says it is not designed for wall mounting; it accepts a padlock or security cable, but those are not included, so budget for a cable if you plan to anchor it in a car. The listing calls it TSA compliant. At writing the two-pack sat in the $100 to $200 range; check the current listing.

5. Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard – Best Nightstand Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

Three entry methods.

Hornady Night Guard drawer holding two handguns, one in a tan leather holster
Our hands-on photoHornady Night Guard drawer holding two handguns, one in a tan leather holster

POWER & BACKUP:

The Night Guard looks like a bedside clock, which is exactly the point. A tempered glass front panel shows the clock, the RFID reader and an access code keypad, and a spring-assist drawer slides out quietly to reveal a padded interior. Two USB-A ports let it double as a phone charger, so it earns its spot on the nightstand.

ACCESS:

Hornady includes an RFID wristband and key fob, two decals and two circular barrel keys, so you have tag, code and key access. The listing describes 14 gauge steel, two hardened locking lugs and a 1500 lb security cable, with AC and battery power. The 2.2 x 9.2 x 6.9 inch interior accommodates most full-size handguns. Because it stands upright at roughly 12 inches tall, measure your nightstand first. The price varies on Amazon; check today’s price.

6. V-Line Slide-Away – Best Under-Desk Drawer

HIGHLIGHT:

12 gauge steel.

Our hands-on photoV-Line Slide-Away drawer open inside a wooden cabinet with two pistols and a magazine

BUILD:

The Slide-Away is built for people who want the handgun within reach of a desk chair or under a shelf rather than on top of furniture. V-Line describes 12 gauge steel, a large pullout drawer on Accuride ball-bearing slides and a quick-release mounting bracket that lets you mount it under a desktop or on top of a surface. You need about 4.25 inches of clearance.

FIT & CAPACITY:

The drawer is large enough for two 1911-type pistols with room for magazines, or a tablet-sized item, and pick-and-pluck foam lets you shape the interior. Access is a genuine Simplex mechanical lock, so there is nothing to charge. It is made in the USA and listed as California DOJ approved. Owner feedback is still limited, and the price varies; check the current price.

HIGHLIGHT:

Slim and light.

GunVault MV500 tucked under a seat
Our hands-on photoGunVault MV500 tucked under a seat

BUILD:

The MicroVault is a notebook-style vault that slides into a briefcase or day pack. The listing gives exterior dimensions of 11 x 8.5 x 2.25 inches, an interior of 10.75 x 6.5 x 2 inches, a weight of 4 pounds and 20 gauge steel construction, which is thinner steel than the Hornady and V-Line boxes but keeps it light.

ACCESS:

A keypad with learn buttons supports more than 12 million user-selectable codes, and the brand describes a no-eyes keypad layout you can work by feel. It runs on a 9V battery that is not included, and the first time you must open it with the key, so keep that key somewhere you can reach. Mounting and cable details are not listed, so check the listing before you plan to secure it in a car. It sat in the $100 to $200 band at writing; check the current price.

Fingerprint, keypad and key access.

Vaultek LifePod 20 Biometric lid open showing the egg-crate foam and front keypad row
Our hands-on photoVaultek LifePod 20 Biometric lid open showing the egg-crate foam and front keypad row

POWER & BACKUP:

The biometric LifePod 20 shares the standard model’s sealed polymer case, removable tray, interior LED light, 9V power, micro-USB emergency port and steel cable, but adds a water-resistant fingerprint scanner on top of the Smart Sense backlit keypad and backup keys. That gives you three ways in, which is the right design for a biometric safe: if a wet or cold finger misreads, the keypad is right there.

FIT & CAPACITY:

It also holds a full-size handgun up to 9.25 inches long, with listed interior dimensions of 9.625 x 7.25 x 2.125 inches. The fingerprint reader moves it into the $200 to $300 band at writing, so choose it only if fingerprint access matters to you. Vaultek is not among the recalled brands, but as with any biometric safe, enroll several fingers and test the reader regularly. Check today’s price.

HIGHLIGHT:

Nothing to charge.

Hornady Lockbox closed with the key in the barrel lock
Our hands-on photoHornady Lockbox closed with the key in the barrel lock

POWER & BACKUP:

Sometimes the best pistol safe is the simplest one. The Hornady Lockbox opens with a barrel key: press the lid down and turn the key to lock, turn it the other way and lift to open. There is no keypad or battery, which suits a glovebox, a range bag or a suitcase for a trip where you just need a locked container.

BUILD:

The listing bullets describe the X Large Alpha Elite version (item no. 98153), with 16 gauge steel housing, a pry-resistant security band, a dual crossbar latch, a padded foam interior and a 1500 lb lock-down cable. That size measures 10.25 x 8 x 2.75 inches outside and fits 1911-size pistols and 3-inch revolvers. Hornady says it meets California DOJ standards and TSA airline firearm guidelines and is certified child-resistant. Because the listing may show more than one size, confirm which one you are buying. The price varies; see the current price.

HIGHLIGHT:

Mechanical lock.

Our hands-on photoV-Line Top Draw closed on a counter, top view of the lid and lock

POWER & BACKUP:

The Top Draw is a top-opening steel case with a five-button Simplex mechanical lock that does not require batteries, finished in textured black powder coat with a stainless lock faceplate. Depending on their size, it can hold up to two pistols in its heavy foam interior, which makes it a good fit for someone storing a carry pistol and a home pistol together.

MOUNTING:

Pre-drilled holes in the bottom let you bolt it to a shelf, a desk or a vehicle surface. The listing does not give interior dimensions or steel gauge in the data we reviewed, so measure your handguns against the listing before you buy. The price varies; check the current price on Amazon.

How to choose the best handgun safe

Lock types: RFID, keypad, fingerprint or mechanical

RFID is the fastest method for most people because it needs no code and no fingerprint read; the risk is that a tag works like a key, so it must be kept from children. Keypads are familiar and reliable, especially backlit or no-eyes layouts you can use in the dark. Fingerprint readers are convenient but depend on a clean read, so pick one with a keypad and key backup, and avoid the recalled brands listed in our recall guide. Mechanical push-button locks such as Simplex need no power at all, which makes them a strong choice for a safe you rarely open. Our biometric vs keypad comparison goes deeper.

V-Line Top Draw lid standing open over the egg-crate foam
Our hands-on photoV-Line Top Draw lid standing open over the egg-crate foam

Fit and capacity

Measure your handgun with any optic, light or extended magazine installed, then compare that with the interior dimensions, not the exterior. Interior height matters most: many quick-access pistol safes are around 2 inches tall inside, which fits one handgun lying flat but not a stack. If you need room for two pistols, look at the V-Line Slide-Away or Top Draw.

Mounting and placement

A small handgun safe that is not anchored can be carried off. Bolt-down holes and brackets are best at home; cables are the practical option in cars and hotel rooms. Our guide on how to bolt down a gun safe covers the basics. Place the safe where you can reach it quickly but where children and guests cannot see or reach it.

Power and backups

Electronic safes need a battery plan: note the battery type, replace it on a schedule, and know where the backup key or USB port is. AC-powered models such as the RAPiD Safe add battery backup, while the LifePod uses a 9V with a micro-USB emergency port. If you dislike maintenance, a mechanical lock removes the issue. For more speed-focused options, see our quick access gun safe picks.

Watch: Pew Pew Tactical walks through several handgun safes for bedroom quick access.

Price tiers

At the time of writing, most picks here sat in the $100 to $200 range, with the Fort Knox PB1 and the biometric LifePod in the $200 to $300 band. Paying more usually buys thicker steel or extra access methods, not necessarily more speed. Prices change often, so check the current price before buying, and see our main gun safe guide if you also need long-gun storage.

Key takeaway: choose the lock you will actually use under stress, confirm the interior fits your handgun, and anchor the safe with bolts or a cable. Storage and child-access laws vary by state; check yours.

Best Handgun Safe FAQ

What is the best handgun safe for a nightstand?

For a nightstand, the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is the most purpose-built pick here: it looks like a bedside clock, opens with RFID, an access code or a barrel key, and adds USB charging. If you prefer a lower profile, the Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID fits inside a drawer and opens with a tap of a wristband or fob.

What is the best handgun safe for a car?

The Vaultek LifePod 20 suits vehicles well because the polymer case is gasket-sealed against dust and water and comes with a steel security cable you can loop around a seat bracket. The Hornady Lockbox is a simpler key-only alternative with a lock-down cable. Whichever you pick, anchor it out of sight rather than leaving it loose.

Is a mechanical pistol safe better than an electronic one?

Neither is better for everyone. Mechanical push-button locks like the Simplex in the Fort Knox PB1 never need batteries, so they suit safes you open rarely. Electronic RFID or keypad locks are often faster and easier in the dark but need a battery or outlet and a backup key. Choose the method you can operate reliably under stress.

Are biometric handgun safes safe to buy?

Many are, but check recalls first. Fingerprint safes from Awesafe, Bulldog (biometric models), Machir and MouTec were recalled because the readers could let unauthorized users, including children, open them. If you choose a biometric model such as the Vaultek LifePod 20 Biometric, make sure it also has a keypad or key backup, and test the reader regularly.

What size handgun safe do I need?

Measure your handgun with any light or optic attached and compare it with the interior dimensions, not the exterior. Most quick-access pistol safes are roughly 2 inches tall inside, which fits one handgun lying flat. If you want to store two pistols and spare magazines, look at larger drawer or top-opening cases like the V-Line Slide-Away or Top Draw.

Can I fly with a handgun safe?

Several picks, including the Hornady RAPiD Safe RFID, the Hornady Lockbox, the StopBox and the Vaultek LifePod 20, describe themselves as meeting TSA guidelines for a locked case in checked luggage. Airline policies and local laws change, so confirm current TSA and airline rules before you travel. Storage and child-access laws also vary by state; check yours.
