This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.
Once we get to home storage in my class, somebody always asks about bedside boxes, and the next question is nearly always about batteries. What happens when they die in the middle of the night? The StopBox USA gets around that by not having any. No batteries, no scanner, no app. You open it by pressing a combination on buttons along one side.
My verdict: it’s a light, flat polymer box for keeping one handgun out of curious hands at home, in the car or in a travel bag. It is not a vault, and it’s built shallow, so measure your gun before you order.

StopBox USA – Best Battery-Free Handgun Lockbox
HIGHLIGHT:
A mechanical combination lock with no batteries, scanners or apps, in a 1.8-pound box that fits a drawer or a bag.
OUT OF THE BOX:
In the photos you can see the plain black box sitting in its brown shipping carton. The seller lists the actuators as included. Padlocks and security cables are not, so if you plan to cable it to something, order one at the same time and save yourself a second trip.

Before the carton goes out to the curb, check how many boxes you got and which size. The Amazon title says “Full-Size Only” and “2PK,” but the options on a page can change. Confirm the pack size and the size in your cart, and again when it shows up on the porch.

THE MECHANICAL LOCK:
StopBox describes a patented mechanical combination system with 81 user-set combinations. You set your code, then press the actuators on the side in order. There’s no keypad to wake up, no sensor to argue with a damp finger, and nothing to charge.

In the photos you can see the actuators lined up along one edge, and a hand closing around the box with the fingers resting on them. That grip is the whole idea. Your hand finds the buttons by feel, the same in the dark or with gloves on. I teach the same thing for any lock: practice the opening until your hands know it, lights off, five times in a row. A code you have to think about at 3 a.m. is a code you’ll miss.

Now the trade-off. With 81 combinations, the code space is a lot smaller than a six-digit electronic PIN. That makes this a box for keeping a gun away from children and visitors, not one I’d trust against a thief with time on his hands. The listing also doesn’t describe a key override or any backup way in. If you forget the code, the maker’s instructions are your only route. Set the code with the box open, run it a dozen times before a gun goes in, and never write the code on the box.
INSIDE ROOM:
Here’s where you slow down and read. The seller gives the full-size interior as 9.25 by 7.15 by 1.75 inches and the compact as 7.5 by 5.5 by 1.75 inches. There’s also a small built-in compartment listed at 5 by 1.5 by 1 inches. That’s room for a key or a folded card, not a spare magazine.

The number that matters is 1.75 inches. That’s the inside height, and it’s shallow. Plenty of compact and mid-size pistols should lie flat in it, but a tall optic, a weapon light or an extended magazine may keep the lid from closing. The seller also lists BB guns, airsoft guns and tasers as things it holds, which tells you the size of box they had in mind.
One photo shows a cardboard pistol outline lying on the foam floor, and that’s not a bad trick for anybody shopping. Trace your gun on cardboard, cut it out, and you’ve got a template for length and width. Then measure the height on its own, at the tallest point with sights and optic included, and hold that number against 1.75.

BUILD & SHELL:
StopBox lists the shell as glass-reinforced polycarbonate-ABS. That’s a molded polymer, not steel, and it’s why the box weighs only 1.8 pounds. The close-up shows the latch hardware molded along the edge of the open lid, with gray foam on the floor below it.

The listing gives no pry rating, no fire rating and nothing like a steel gauge, and I won’t guess at any of them. A polymer case stops curious hands and casual tampering. It won’t stand up to a pry bar the way thick steel does. The brand also says it makes its products in the United States. That’s their statement and I can’t check it from the listing, but it may matter to you.
LID PATTERNS:
The listing names black, sold single or as a 2-pack. In the photos you can also see lids with printed patterns: a skull over gray camo, and a weathered American flag. If a pattern matters to you, check what’s offered on the page before you count on it.

NO BATTERIES:
Short section, because the design makes it short. The seller says there are no batteries or electronics. That knocks dead batteries and scanner trouble off the list of things that can go wrong. For a box that rides in a car through an eastern North Carolina summer and a cold January morning, that counts for something. Heat and cold are hard on small batteries.
The flip side: no audit log, no app, no alerts. If you want to know when the box was opened, a mechanical lock can’t tell you.
MOUNTING & CABLE:
The seller says plainly that it isn’t designed for wall mounting, and the mounting type is listed as freestanding. So don’t plan on bolting it into a stud. What it does offer is compatibility with padlocks or security cables, and the seller lists it as TSA compliant for travel.

The close-up shows a steel cable coming into the box near the hinge, and that’s the move I’d make. As an old lawman, my first thought on a 1.8-pound box is that a burglar can tuck it under his arm on the way out the door. A cable looped around a seat bracket or a bed frame won’t stop a man with bolt cutters. It stops the quick grab-and-go, and that’s the theft I see most.
If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.
SIZE CHECK:
StopBox lists the outside at 11.5 by 8.5 by 2.25 inches. That slides into a standard drawer, lies flat under a car seat or rides in a gym bag. In the photos you can see one on a nightstand and another on a shelf with a hand resting on top, which gives you a feel for how flat it is.

Put it where you can reach it in the dark without fumbling, and where children and visitors can’t get at it alone. With a box this simple, where you put it does more for you than any lock feature.
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:
Where it earns its keep: The StopBox is compact and sturdy and works with no batteries, electronics or keypad. The manual finger-code combination is simple to learn and becomes quick to open with practice.
Where it falls short: There are no built-in mounting holes to secure it to a wall or desk, the cable lock is sold separately rather than included, and the plastic feels cheaper than the price suggests.
Who it’s for: Quick, battery-free manual access to a handgun in a drawer or closet with nothing electronic to fail. Look elsewhere if you need wall or desk mounting or a heavy-duty build.
WHAT TO WATCH:
Three things. The 1.75-inch inside height rules out a lot of guns wearing lights and tall optics. There’s no key or backup way in described, so a forgotten code is your problem to solve. And with no wall mounting, a cable is the only thing keeping it from walking off.
WHO SHOULD BUY IT:
Buy it if you want a light, flat box for one handgun in a drawer, a car or a travel bag, and you like a lock that can’t go dead. At the time of writing it sat in the $100 to $200 range, depending on whether you pick one box or the 2-pack. Skip it if you want steel, fire protection, a bolt-down box or a fingerprint reader. If you’d rather have a backlit keypad and backup keys in a portable case, look at my Vaultek LifePod 20 review.

StopBox USA FAQ
Does the StopBox USA need batteries?
No. The seller describes it as a mechanical lockbox with no batteries or electronics. You press a combination you set on the actuators to open it. The trade-off is no app, no audit log and no alert when it’s opened.
Will my handgun fit in the StopBox USA?
The full-size interior is listed at 9.25 by 7.15 by 1.75 inches and the compact at 7.5 by 5.5 by 1.75 inches. The low height is the limit, so measure your pistol with any light, optic or magazine against those numbers before you order.
Can I mount the StopBox USA to a wall?
The seller says it isn’t designed for wall mounting and lists it as freestanding. It is listed as compatible with padlocks or security cables, sold separately, so you can tether it to something solid.
What if I forget the combination?
The listing doesn’t describe a key override or backup method. Follow the maker’s instructions for resetting the code, set your combination with the box open, and run it several times before you store anything inside.
Is the listing one box or two?
The Amazon title mentions a 2-pack and says full-size only, but options can change. Confirm the size and the quantity in your cart, since the price depends on what you pick.
