Best Sight Pusher for 1911: Novak Dovetails, the Set Screw Everyone Forgets, and Front Sights Too — Reviewed by Bill Wilson, Wilson Combat

The 1911 is the one common pistol where a sight pusher earns its keep at both ends. Most modern 1911s wear Novak-style rear sights in a 65-degree dovetail with a set screw underneath, and a dovetailed front sight near the muzzle. Budget Glock-style pushers do not fit the rounded 1911 slide top, and most do not reach the front sight at all. Here are the tools that do, and the one step that prevents the gouged dovetails 1911 owners post about.

1911 picks

  • Best for 1911 overall: Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – full capture holds the rounded slide, flat shoe, does the front sight.
  • Steel front-and-rear: TRUGLO Steel Sight Tool – no flex on tight Novak sights.
  • Budget that names 1911: Kuber Universal Handgun Sight Pusher – 1911 in the compatibility list; rear only.
  • Budget front and rear: NcSTAR VISM VTUFNR – does both ends for less; aluminum.

The set screw: loosen it or ruin the dovetail

Novak, Heinie, Trijicon, Wilson and most aftermarket 1911 rear sights have a set screw, usually accessed from the top or the rear of the sight, that bears down on the dovetail floor. Push against a tightened set screw and one of two things happens: the screw digs a groove along the dovetail as the sight moves, or the sight does not move and the pusher strips. Thirty seconds with an Allen key, two full turns out, before anything else. This is the single most common 1911 sight-change mistake and it is entirely avoidable. The general procedure is in how to use a sight pusher.

The 65-degree dovetail

Novak dovetails are cut at 65 degrees where many modern pistols use 60 or 90. The pusher does not care about the angle; what matters is that the shoe sits flat on the sight body. 1911 rear sights are flat-backed, so use the flat shoe, and seat it on the base of the sight, not the blade. Some older GI-pattern 1911s use a staked front sight and a tiny tenon rear; a pusher does not apply to those, and a gunsmith is the answer.

The rounded slide top

Many 1911 slides are rounded on top and the sides are tall and flat. Two-jaw pushers sized for a Glock clamp the flat sides fine but can sit too low for the sight height; full-capture clamps and adjustable-height tools handle it. Tape the slide: 1911 finishes (blued, stainless, Cerakote) show marks more than a nitride Glock. The direction of removal varies by maker; check for a witness mark or measure the dovetail openings, because 1911 dovetails are often tapered. See which way to move the rear sight for the taper check and windage math.

Front sights

Most modern 1911 front sights are dovetailed and come out with a pusher that has a front adapter, which is why the Wheeler, TRUGLO and VISM make this list and rear-only tools do not. The front dovetail is near the muzzle where the slide is shorter and the clamp has less to hold; clamp as far forward as the flat allows and go slowly. Some front sights are also set-screwed or pinned; check before pushing.

Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool

Holds the rounded 1911 slide square, flat shoe seats on Novak-style sights, steel push block handles tight dovetails, and the front adapter reaches the front sight. Owners report clean changes on Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Ruger SR1911 and Rock Island slides. It is the one tool for a 1911 owner with other pistols too.

TRUGLO Steel Sight Tool

All steel, front and rear, flat shoe by default, which is exactly the 1911 setup. If your 1911 has tight factory sights or you want zero flex, this is the durable choice. Review in our TRUGLO sight tool review.

Kuber Universal Handgun Sight Pusher

Rear only, aluminum, but it lists 1911 by name and owners confirm the fit. For a rear sight swap on a 1911 whose set screw you remember to loosen, it does the job on a budget. Grease the push threads.

NcSTAR VISM VTUFNR

Budget front and rear, which is rare. Aluminum, so not for seized sights, but for a 1911 whose sights move with moderate force it covers both ends for less than a rear-only name brand. Compared in best budget sight pusher.

FAQ

Do 1911 rear sights have a set screw?

Most Novak-style and aftermarket 1911 rear sights do. Loosen it two turns before pushing or you will groove the dovetail.

Can a sight pusher remove a 1911 front sight?

If it is dovetailed and the tool has a front adapter, yes. Staked GI front sights need a gunsmith.

Which way does a 1911 rear sight come out?

It varies by maker and many are tapered. Look for a witness mark or measure both dovetail openings and drift toward the wider side.
