In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

Springfield gives sight pushers two different problems. The Hellcat and Hellcat Pro slides are slim, so a clamp sized for a Glock 19 sits off-center and puts the shoe on the slide top instead of the sight. The XD and XD-M rear sights are tall, so a fixed-height push screw can hit the blade instead of the base. Both are clamp-height problems, and both are solved by the same two kinds of tool: adjustable-base pushers and full-capture clamps.

Springfield picks

  • Best for Hellcat and XD: Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – capture clamp adjusts to the slim Hellcat and the tall XD sight.
  • Adjustable budget: Pridefend Universal with adjustable base – dial the height to the slide.
  • Budget that lists Springfield: Kuber Universal Handgun Sight Pusher – Springfield in the compatibility list; flat shoe.

Hellcat: slim slide

The Hellcat slide is about an inch wide. Two-jaw pushers with fixed jaw spacing designed around double-stack slides close on it off-center, and the push screw ends up over the slide edge rather than over the sight. You need jaws that close symmetrically to the slide width (Wheeler) or a base you can shift (Pridefend adjustable). The Hellcat’s rear sight is flat-backed with a U-notch; use the flat shoe. Many Hellcats ship with a tritium front and a set-screwed rear; loosen the screw first per how to use a sight pusher.

XD and XD-M: tall rear sight

XD rear sights sit tall on the slide. On a fixed-height pusher the shoe contacts the blade, not the base, and pushing on the blade bends or marks it. Set the clamp height so the shoe is on the thick base in the dovetail. XD sights are usually not pressed in as hard as M&P sights, so budget tools survive them if the shoe is seated right.

Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool

Owners report clean changes on Hellcat, Hellcat Pro, XD, XD-M and XD-S. The capture clamp centers on any slide width and the push screw height suits tall sights. Flat shoe included. Also does the XD’s dovetailed front sight.

Pridefend Universal with adjustable base

The adjustable base is the Hellcat fix at budget money: set the clamp to the slim slide and the shoe lands on the sight. Angled and flat shoes included, steel push block. Fewer reviews than the big names.

Kuber Universal Handgun Sight Pusher

Lists Springfield by name. Fixed jaws, so check fit on a Hellcat before pushing; fine on the XD if the shoe is seated on the base. Aluminum; grease the push screw. Compared in best budget sight pusher.

Front sights

XD front sights are dovetailed and come out with a front-adapter tool. Hellcat front sights are dovetailed as well. See best front sight pusher for the muzzle-end technique. Our full ranking across all pistols is best sight pusher tools.

FAQ

Will a Glock sight pusher fit a Hellcat?

No. Glock tools are cut for wider square slides and ship with an angled shoe; the Hellcat needs a flat shoe and a clamp that centers on a slim slide.

Why does the pusher hit the blade on my XD?

XD rear sights are tall. Lower the clamp height or use a tool whose push screw is set higher, so the shoe meets the sight base.
