In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

Not everybody who comes through my class has a basement or a spare garage bay. Plenty of them live in an apartment or a starter house where the only open floor is a closet corner about a foot square. A big wide safe isn’t going in there, no matter how good the sale is.

The KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe is built for that foot of floor: a slim, pre-assembled keypad cabinet for a few rifles or shotguns and some handguns.

My verdict: a sensible, low-fuss cabinet with a good backup plan for a dead battery. Measure your scoped rifles first, and bolt it down, because 63 pounds won’t stay put on its own.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe – Best Slim Keypad Rifle Cabinet Under $300

HIGHLIGHT:

A keypad, two backup keys and an external emergency power box on a pre-assembled cabinet less than 12 inches wide.

OUT OF THE BOX:

KAER says the cabinet arrives 100 percent pre-assembled, so there’s no rack to build before you can use it. The listing puts a battery box, a bolt, a key and the user manual in the box. The seller’s copy also mentions two spare backup keys, so count what you get and decide right then where each key is going to live.

In the photos you can see the cabinet closed and standing against a wall: plain black, with a round keypad up top and the lock and handle below it. KAER lists it at 63 pounds. That’s one strong person or two average ones getting it up the stairs. Look it over for shipping dents and swing the door a few times before you load anything.

KEYPAD & BACKUP KEYS:

The keypad is the main way in. The close-up shows a round keypad with the key lock just below it and the handle under that. KAER lists three ways to open it: the keypad, the backup keys, and an external emergency power box that wakes the keypad if the batteries inside run completely dry.

The seller also says several wrong codes in a row will lock the keypad for a while and set off the alarm. That’s good against a curious teenager working through birthdays. It also means every adult who knows the code should practice it, so a nervous thumb doesn’t set the alarm off at night. The listing doesn’t say how many digits the code takes or how many users it holds, so check the manual.

There’s a silent mode, too, and in a bedroom closet that matters. Then the keys. The listing itself warns never to leave them inside the safe, and I’d go further. I tell every class the key does not live on top of the cabinet or in the dresser next to it. Key ring, or a second locked spot a child can’t find. Change the factory code the day it arrives.

DOOR & BOLTS:

The seller’s bullets call out 15-gauge steel and 0.8-inch anti-pry active locking bolts, on a carbon steel body. Those are the brand’s claims, not a lab result, but at least they’re numbers you can compare. In the photos you can see the door open on an empty cabinet with the bolts standing out along its edge, and a hand turning the black handle on the front.

As an old lawman, my first thought on a cabinet this size is the burglar with ten minutes and a pry bar. Bolts on the door make him work. A cabinet that’s not anchored, he just carries out to the truck and works on at home. More on that below.

INSIDE ROOM:

KAER lists 4.08 cubic feet inside and says it holds 3 to 5 rifles up to 53 inches long, plus 4 to 5 handguns. With the outside at 11.02 inches deep and 11.8 wide, I’d plan on three long guns with optics and be pleased if a fourth fits. Big scopes, bipods and fat stocks eat room fast in a cabinet this narrow.

That 53-inch limit against a 54.33-inch outside height tells you length is tight too. Measure your longest gun with the sling, optic and any muzzle device on it before you order. The listing doesn’t give interior dimensions, so ask the seller if you’re close.

The photos show a gray carpet-type lining on the walls and the inside of the door. The listing doesn’t mention a lining, so go by what’s in your box.

SHELF, RACK & DOOR ORGANIZER:

KAER lists a removable shelf, a gun rack and a door organizer for magazines, scopes and other small gear. The seller says you can arrange them around your guns, and the photos show the racks in more than one spot. One close-up shows a notched barrel rest above the shelf with a second notched rack below it, and another shows the rack set up high near the top of the cabinet.

Another shot shows a hand beside two of the notched rack pieces on the lined wall. Take the shelf out and you trade shelf space for more height, which is the right move if you’re storing long guns only.

The door organizer keeps loose magazines and small items off the cabinet floor. In the photos you can see its pockets on the inside of the door, next to the racks. With children in the house, I like ammunition locked up apart from the guns when you can manage it. If the door pockets are your only option, at least it’s all behind one locked door.

POWER & LIGHT:

The batteries run the keypad, the alarm and an inner sensor LED that KAER says comes on by itself when the door opens. That light is a real help in a dark closet. The external emergency power box is the safety net if the batteries die.

What the listing doesn’t say is the battery type or how long a set lasts. Read the manual, keep fresh spares of the right kind in a drawer in another room, and test the keypad after every change. Practice the emergency power route once with the door open, so you’re not learning it under stress. Then put a reminder on your phone to check the batteries on the first of every month.

MOUNTING:

The spec sheet says floor mount, and the seller mentions four pre-drilled holes that allow floor or wall installation. A bolt comes in the box, but don’t assume it suits every floor. Concrete, a wood subfloor and carpet over padding all want different hardware. On a cabinet this tall and narrow, I’d anchor to the floor and to a wall stud if I could. Tall cabinets tip, and one full of rifles coming down on a child is its own danger.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

SIZE CHECK:

One of the photos shows it tucked in a corner with two ammunition cans on top and a hard rifle case leaning beside it. That gives you a feel for how little floor it takes. You need a clear spot more than 54 inches tall and enough room for the door to swing wide when you lift a rifle out.

Our hands-on photoKAER long gun safe in a corner with two ammo cans on top and a rifle case beside it

Keep it out of sight of the front door and out of a damp basement or a hot garage. Electronics and moisture don’t mix, and neither do moisture and gun bluing.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe fits five long guns comfortably once the removable shelves are reconfigured, makes good use of interior space with a clever pistol rack, and is a handy size for placing closer to the bedroom than a full-size safe.

Where it falls short: It is more a lockable gun case than a true safe. Rifles with scopes or optics often will not fit or let the door close properly, and interior space is tight for bulkier long guns.

Who it’s for: A compact secondary safe for a few long guns and handguns without optics. Scoped rifles and heavy-duty security needs point elsewhere.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The narrow inside is the big one: scoped rifles may not fit the way the 3-to-5 number suggests. There’s no fire rating, no waterproofing claim and no independent certification, and the battery type isn’t listed. And at 63 pounds, it has to be anchored.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you have a few long guns and a couple of handguns, a small closet or hallway corner, and you want a keypad with a real backup plan. At the time of writing it sat in the $200 to $300 range. Skip it if you need fire protection, a wide interior for scoped rifles, or a growing collection. Step up to a bigger cabinet or a full safe for that.

KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe FAQ

What size rifles fit in the KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe?

The seller says 3 to 5 rifles up to 53 inches long, plus 4 to 5 handguns. The outside is 54.33 inches tall and only about 11 inches deep and wide, so measure your longest gun with its optic, sling and stock before you order. Interior dimensions aren’t listed.

What if the KAER safe’s batteries die?

Use the external emergency power box to wake the keypad, or the backup keys. The battery type and life aren’t listed, so check the manual and keep fresh spares in another room.

Can I mount the KAER Electronic Long Gun Safe to a wall?

The spec sheet says floor mount, and the seller mentions four pre-drilled holes for floor or wall installation. A bolt is included, but pick hardware that suits your floor or wall. On a cabinet this tall, anchoring to both is better.

Does the KAER long gun safe have a fire rating?

No fire rating or waterproofing claim appears in the listing. Treat it as a cabinet for keeping guns away from children and casual hands, and keep papers you can’t replace somewhere with a published fire rating.

What happens if someone enters the wrong code?

According to the seller, several wrong tries lock the keypad for a while and set off the alarm. Everyone who uses the safe should practice the code, and you should confirm the exact lockout rules in the manual.
