Langger Under-Bed Gun Safe Review: An NRA Instructor’s Take On This Hidden Rifle Drawer — Reviewed by Massad Ayoob, Tested by Chris Raper

In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

When I ask a class where the long gun lives at their house, the answer I hear most is “under the bed.” Too often that means a rifle lying loose on the carpet behind a storage tub, right where a grandchild crawls looking for a lost toy.

The Langger Under-Bed Gun Safe keeps that same hiding spot and puts a locked steel drawer around it. It’s nearly four feet wide, low enough to slide under a lot of bed frames, and opens with a PIN code or a key.

My verdict: one of the few budget ways to lock up a rifle lying flat and out of sight, as long as your bed frame clears 6.7 inches and your rifle’s optic clears about 4.25.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

Langger Under-Bed Gun Safe – Best Under-Bed Rifle Safe Under $300

HIGHLIGHT:

A 43.3-inch steel drawer with published inside measurements, PIN and key entry, and an alarm, built to hide under a bed.

OUT OF THE BOX:

Langger lists the safe, a mounting hardware set, emergency keys and a user manual in the box. At 75 pounds, it ships heavy. In the photos you can see a wood-slat shipping crate, the safe wrapped in black plastic inside its carton, and a layer of white foam over the top.

Get a second set of hands before you lift it out. Look it over for shipping damage, slide the drawer in and out a few times, and count the keys. If anything’s bent, call the seller before you bolt it down, not after.

KEYPAD & BACKUP KEY:

There’s no fingerprint reader and no RFID on this one, just an electronic keypad where you set your own PIN, backed by a key. I don’t mind that. A PIN doesn’t care if your finger is wet or cut. But you do have to remember it and punch it in with your heart going, down at floor level, in the dark. Pick a code you can type without looking, stay away from birthdays, and practice it with the lights off. The listing doesn’t describe a lockout after wrong tries or how the key works with a dead battery, so read the manual.

The close-up shows the emergency keys on their ring. I tell every class the same thing: the key does not live in the nightstand beside the bed the safe is under. Put one on your key ring and one in a second locked spot.

Langger lists an alarm system under special features but says nothing about what sets it off or how loud it is. Find that out from the manual before you count on it.

INSIDE THE DRAWER:

This is where Langger does better than most budget safes. The seller publishes real inside numbers: 43.3 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and about 4.33 inches of height with the bottom foam out, or 4.25 with it in. Langger says it holds one or two rifles, several handguns, ammo and magazines, jewelry and documents.

In the photos you can see a rifle lying in the egg-crate foam with a strap across the floor of the drawer, and a tape measure run along the inside. A rifle has to lie flat in there, so a scope, a bipod, a sling swivel or a magazine hanging down all eat into that 4.25 inches. A long-barreled hunting rifle or a shotgun may not fit the 43.3-inch length at all.

SIZE CHECK:

Two more photos show a tape run front to back across the drawer floor, and one standing straight up in the drawer to check the inside height. That’s the same homework I’d do with your own guns before ordering.

Measure your longest gun, its height at the scope, and how far the magazine well hangs down. Write those down and lay them next to Langger’s inside numbers. If one of them is close, assume it won’t fit.

UNDER THE BED:

The outside is 46.8 inches wide, 15.5 inches deep and 6.7 inches tall. Your bed frame has to clear that, with room to pull the drawer out. In the photos you can see it closed under a bed frame with the round keypad centered on the front, and the top photo shows the drawer pulled out into the room.

Measure from the floor to the lowest part of your frame, and count the bed skirt and any storage tubs in the way. Then make sure you can pull the drawer all the way out from the side of the bed you sleep on. I practice opening a bedside safe the way I teach students to practice a draw: lights off, starting from lying down, five times in a row.

CLOSET OR VEHICLE:

The seller says it can also stand upright in a closet. In the photos you can see it lying flat on a tile floor under a closet shoe shelf, closed in one shot and pulled open in another on boxes of ammunition and other gear.

Stood on end, it turns into a very short cabinet, and guns that were lying flat will slide around, so plan how you’ll hold them in place. With children in the house, I like ammunition kept apart from the guns when you can manage it. Langger also suggests a vehicle. At 75 pounds with a fixed-mount design, that’s a real install, not a toss-it-in-the-trunk job, and laws on guns in vehicles vary by state, so check yours.

BUILD & MOUNTING:

The spec table lists alloy steel, and the seller describes steel walls with tamper-resistant inner edges. No gauge, wall thickness, pry rating, fire rating or certification is listed, so take the steel description as the maker’s word and nothing more.

As an old lawman, my first thought on any under-bed box is the thief who finds it. Hiding it is the first layer. At 75 pounds, carrying it off is a two-hand job, and one dark close-up shows a recessed handle set into the side, which helps you and him both. The pre-punched holes in the back and bottom let you bolt it to the floor, and a hardware set is included. Under a bed that may take some work depending on your frame and flooring, but anchor it where you can.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

POWER:

The keypad is electronic, and Langger doesn’t list the battery type, battery life or any outside power option. That’s the biggest unknown on the listing. Learn how the key override works before you need it, keep spare batteries outside the safe, and put a reminder on your phone for the first of every month. A dead keypad on a 75-pound box bolted under your bed is a poor time to start reading the manual.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The Langger Under-Bed Gun Safe is heavy-duty and well built for the price, sets up easily with straightforward instructions, has a strong-feeling locking mechanism, and includes sturdy side carry handles with a secure wire-rope tether.

Where it falls short: On some units the lock can be opened with slight force on the dial even when “locked,” batteries can drain unusually fast, and some units ship without mounting hardware or with a damaged key.

Who it’s for: An affordable under-bed safe that fits rifles such as ARs plus ammo and accessories. Test the lock under pressure before trusting it.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The 4.25 inches of inside height is the big one. A rifle with a tall optic or a magazine in may not clear it. After that come bed clearance, the 75-pound weight, and the missing battery, fire and security details.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you have a rifle or two and some handguns you want out of sight, your bed frame sits high enough, and you’re fine with a PIN and a key instead of a fingerprint. At the time of writing it sat in the $200 to $300 range. Skip it if your bed sits low, your rifle wears a big scope, or you need a fire rating. If you’d rather keep rifles standing up, a cabinet is the better layout.

Langger Under-Bed Gun Safe FAQ

What size rifle fits in the Langger under-bed gun safe?

Langger lists the drawer at 43.3 inches wide, 12 inches deep and about 4.25 to 4.33 inches high. Measure your rifle’s length and its height at the scope or magazine. The seller says it holds one or two rifles, but optics can cut that down.

Will the Langger safe fit under my bed?

The outside is 46.8 inches wide, 15.5 inches deep and 6.7 inches tall. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of your frame, count any bed skirt or storage tubs, and leave room to pull the drawer out. The seller also says it can stand in a closet.

How do you open the Langger safe if the keypad fails?

Use the backup key; emergency keys come in the box. The listing doesn’t give the battery type or an outside power option, so check the manual and keep the keys away from the bed.

Can the Langger under-bed safe be bolted to the floor?

Yes. The seller says pre-punched holes in the back and bottom let you fasten it to the floor, and a mounting hardware set is included. Check that the hardware suits your flooring.

Is the Langger under-bed safe fire rated?

No fire rating, certification or steel gauge is listed. If you need fire protection for papers or valuables, pick a product with a published fire rating.
