This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.
The question I hear most from students who own a rifle or shotgun for home defense is simple: where do I keep it so my grandkids can’t get to it, but I can? A long gun leaning in a closet answers the second half and fails the first. A big fire safe in the garage answers the first half and fails the second.
Vaultek’s RS Series is built for that middle ground. It’s a tall, narrow smart cabinet for long guns that opens by fingerprint, keypad, a small Nano Key fob or a manual key, and it can send an alert to your phone when somebody opens or bumps it. It comes in three sizes: the RS200i, RS500i and RS800i.
My verdict: a well-thought-out quick-access long-gun cabinet with good backups and useful alerts. Buy it for fast access and keeping hands off the guns. Don’t buy it for fire protection or to stop a determined thief with tools and time, because Vaultek doesn’t claim either.
FYI, specifications are taken from Vaultek’s product pages at the time of writing.
Vaultek RS Series – Best Smart Quick-Access Rifle Safe
HIGHLIGHT:
Four ways in, an auto-opening door and phone alerts on a 14-gauge steel long-gun cabinet that comes in three depths.
THE THREE MODELS:
All three share the same front panel, lock, bolts and app. What changes is depth, height and how much fits inside.
RS200i. Vaultek lists it at 14 inches wide, 7.5 inches deep and 50 inches tall, at 45 pounds. The inside is 13.75 by 5.125 by 48 inches. That’s a slim cabinet meant for a closet corner. Vaultek’s description says two rifles plus handguns, while its comparison table says up to three rifles. Plan on two.
RS500i. 14 wide, 11.7 deep and 54 inches tall, listed at 93 pounds. Inside, 13.75 by 9.75 by 53.25 inches. Vaultek’s description says five-plus rifles and its table says up to six.
RS800i. 14 wide, 16 deep and 54 inches tall, listed at 124 pounds. Inside, 13.75 by 12.6 by 53.25 inches. Vaultek says up to eight rifles, and it’s the one that comes with a shelf in the starter kit.
Depth decides it for most people. A scoped bolt gun or an AR with an optic and light needs room front to back, so the RS200i is probably too shallow for a scoped rifle. Measure your longest and widest long gun with everything attached. Our safe sizing guide walks through how.
ACCESS:
Vaultek gives you four ways in. The fingerprint scanner stores up to 80 prints, and the RS500i page lists it as a 508 DPI sensor. The keypad is an eight-button backlit capacitive pad that takes a PIN of four to eight digits. There’s a small Nano Key fob, and there’s a keyway with two manual keys. When the scanner or keypad unlocks it, the door opens toward you on its own.
Here’s what I tell every class about biometric locks. They’re fast when your finger is clean and dry and you put it down the same way every time. Wet, cold, cut or greasy fingers read worse. So enroll the same finger several times, enroll a second finger on each hand, and learn the keypad code until your hand knows it in the dark. If the fingerprint fails at 3 a.m., you go straight to the keypad without thinking about it. Our page on whether biometric safes are reliable covers the habits that make them work.
And the key talk: one key where you can reach it, the second in a separate locked spot, never on top of the safe.
APP & ALERTS:
The “i” in these model names is Vaultek’s ViSN Wi-Fi system. The safe connects to your home Wi-Fi on 2.4 or 5 GHz and sends live alerts through the ViSN app, including when it’s opened and when impact detection senses a hit. Vaultek says email and push alerts are standard and text-message alerts need a paid ViSN Premium subscription.
For a parent with teenagers, a phone buzz that says the gun cabinet just opened is worth a lot. Vaultek’s RS500i page also describes an Essential Mode that lets you program the safe without the app or Wi-Fi, with no live alerts. The RS200i page says the app is required for setup. Read the manual for your exact model before you count on running it offline.
BUILD & STEEL:
Vaultek describes the body as progressive formed 14-gauge steel with four solid steel locking bolts, anti-pry bars and ruggedized interior hinges. Fourteen-gauge sheet steel is roughly 0.075 inch thick. That’s typical for a quality long-gun cabinet and well above the thin lockers sold at big-box stores, but it’s not the plate steel of a heavy vault-style safe.
It keeps children, visitors and a fast smash-and-grab thief out and gets a long gun in your hands quickly. A burglar with a pry bar, a grinder and an hour alone is a different problem, and bolting the cabinet down is a big part of the answer.
FIRE:
Vaultek lists no fire rating for the RS Series. Don’t assume one. If you need guns and papers protected from a house fire, that’s a different, much heavier class of safe. Our fireproof gun safe guide explains what fire ratings actually promise.
INSIDE ROOM:
Every RS model has modular pegboards pre-installed on the back wall and the inside of the door, and LED lights that come on when the door opens. Vaultek’s starter kits include a twin pistol rack or universal twin holster and barrel mounts with adapters. The RS800i kit adds a two-thirds-width shelf, five barrel mounts and a slim pistol or AR magazine holder.
The pegboard matters for one reason: you can keep the defensive long gun in the same spot, facing the same way, so your hand finds it in the dark every time. Same principle as a consistent holster position.
POWER:
The RS cabinets run on a wall power cable, with four AA batteries as backup during an outage. The batteries aren’t included. Vaultek says backup runtime is about three to four months in low-power mode.
The power goes out in an ice storm, nobody thinks about the safe, and three months later the AAs are dead. Put fresh AAs of the type the manual calls for in when you set it up, write the date on a strip of tape inside the door, and change them on a schedule. And keep that manual key where you can get to it.
MOUNTING:
Every RS model has pre-drilled holes for wall or floor mounting, and Vaultek includes the hardware. Use it. The RS200i weighs about 45 pounds, which one person can carry out the door. Even the 124-pound RS800i is a two-man job for a thief, not an impossible one.
Anchor it to wall studs and the floor if you can. On a concrete slab, use proper concrete anchors. On a wood floor, find the joists. Our guide on how to bolt down a gun safe covers each case.
If you have children in the house, remember storage is a legal matter as well as a safety one. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can make you criminally liable if a minor gets hold of a loaded gun you left accessible and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:
Where it earns its keep: Fast access to a long gun by print, keypad, Nano Key or key; an auto-opening door; phone alerts and impact detection; pegboard walls that let you set up a consistent layout; pre-drilled anchor holes and included hardware.
Where it falls short: No fire rating; 14-gauge cabinet steel rather than heavy plate; text alerts behind a subscription; capacity figures on Vaultek’s own pages don’t always agree; the shallow RS200i won’t take most scoped rifles.
Who it’s for: Households that keep one or more defensive long guns and need them locked away from children and visitors but reachable in seconds, especially folks who like knowing on their phone when the cabinet opens.
WHAT TO WATCH:
Capacity is the first thing. Vaultek’s description and comparison table give different rifle counts for the RS200i and RS500i, so plan around the lower number and measure your guns. Optics, lights and slings eat space fast.
Second, the app. Wi-Fi safes depend on your router, the app and the company’s servers for alerts. The lock still works without them, but the alert feature doesn’t. If you don’t care about alerts or an auto-open door, a plain keypad cabinet costs less; see our gun cabinet picks.
WHO SHOULD BUY IT:
Buy an RS if the home-defense long gun is the reason you’re shopping and you want it fast, locked and watched. Pick the RS200i for one or two slim long guns in a closet, the RS500i for a mixed rack, and the RS800i if you want room for scoped rifles, a shelf and handguns. Skip it if fire protection is your top priority, or if you want a heavy vault for a large collection. For more choices, see my best rifle safe picks.

Vaultek RS Series FAQ
Is the Vaultek RS Series fireproof?
No. Vaultek lists no fire rating for the RS200i, RS500i or RS800i. If fire protection matters, pair it with a fire-rated safe for documents and other valuables.
How many rifles fit in a Vaultek RS500i?
Vaultek’s description says five-plus rifles and its comparison table says up to six. The real number depends on optics, lights and stocks, so measure your guns against the 13.75 by 9.75 by 53.25 inch interior.
Does the Vaultek RS need Wi-Fi to work?
The lock opens by fingerprint, keypad, Nano Key or key without Wi-Fi. Live alerts need Wi-Fi and the ViSN app. Vaultek’s pages differ by model on whether the app is needed for setup, so check your model’s manual.
What happens if the power goes out?
Four AA batteries take over as backup, and Vaultek says they last about three to four months in low-power mode. The two manual keys open the cabinet if the batteries are dead too.
