XDeer Wireless Charging Biometric Safe Review: A 40-Year Lawman’s Take On This Nightstand Safe — Reviewed by Chris Raper

This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

When I get to home storage in class, I ask folks what sits on their nightstand. The answers run about the same: a phone on a charger, a clock, a lamp. Every so often somebody admits to a loaded pistol loose in the drawer. The XDeer Wireless Charging Biometric Safe tries to fold all of that into one box.

My verdict: it’s a feature-heavy bedside box with fingerprint, code and key access, a phone charging pad on the lid and a clock on the front. It’s worth a look if you’ll keep it plugged in, cable or screw it down, and check your pistol’s height against it first.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

XDeer Wireless Charging Biometric Safe – Best Nightstand Gun Safe With Wireless Charging

HIGHLIGHT:

Fingerprint, code and key access under a 15W phone charging pad, with a clock and status display across the front.

OUT OF THE BOX:

XDeer lists a full kit in the box: two keys, the user manual, a power adapter, a data line, a steel security cable, two expansion screws and a hex screwdriver. In the photos you can see the safe still sitting in its packing with the manual beside it, and another shot with the keys and a cord laid across the lid.

Count the parts before the cardboard goes out to the curb. Then read the manual front to back. The seller talks about three ways in, but the spec sheet lists four lock types: biometric, electronic combination, mechanical code and key. The manual is where you find out which ones this unit really uses.

TOP PANEL & FINGERPRINT READER:

Everything you touch is on top. The close-up shows the round charging pad, and below it a row of four numbered buttons with the fingerprint reader set in the middle of them. Seen from above on a nightstand, the control panel takes up only part of the lid.

XDeer quotes a 0.1-second response time for the reader, plus its own false-acceptance and false-rejection targets. Those are the maker’s numbers, not anybody’s test. I teach the same trick for every biometric safe: enroll the same finger several times at different angles, flat, tipped up and rolled a little to each side. Half asleep, your hand doesn’t land the way it did at the kitchen table when you set it up.

One more thought about a reader on the lid. If your phone lives on that charging pad every night, your hand is going to be working around it in the dark. Practice that reach before you need it.

KEYPAD, SILENT MODE & BACKUP KEY:

When a finger won’t read, you go to the code. XDeer lists a silent mode, switched on by holding the number 4 button, that kills the unlock sounds. In a bedroom that matters. You don’t want the whole house, or whoever just came into it, hearing you open the gun box.

Now the key. The close-up of the back shows the USB output and the DC jack, with a key lock just below them. That puts the key on the wall side of most nightstands, so leave yourself enough room to get a hand back there.

And I tell every class the same thing: the key does not live in the drawer under the safe, and it never lives where a child can find it. Keep one on your key ring and the other in a second locked spot. A safe with the key sitting beside it is just a box with a lid.

CLOCK & DISPLAY:

The front of the box is a display. In the photos it shows a red clock readout with smaller numbers off to the left and a green battery icon on the right. XDeer says the screen shows time, humidity, temperature, battery level and lock status.

The humidity reading is a handy extra in a bedroom or closet that runs damp. It tells you there’s a problem. It doesn’t fix one, and it isn’t a rating for what the box can stand up to. The battery readout is the part I’d watch most. A safe that tells you it’s getting low is a safe you can keep working.

WIRELESS CHARGING & POWER:

XDeer describes a 15W wireless charging pad on the lid, which it says is FCC certified, plus one USB output. The close-up shows the round pad with the charging symbol sitting above the buttons. How fast your phone charges depends on the phone, the case and how you lay it down, so don’t expect it to keep up with the charger that came with your phone. Metal cases and thick covers can slow it down or stop it.

The box comes with an adapter and a data line, and the display reports battery level, so it looks like an internal battery fed from the wall. The listing doesn’t say what battery it uses, how long it runs, or whether the pad works when the unit is unplugged. One photo shows the cord running to the wall outlet behind it, and that’s how I’d plan to keep it.

Whatever the setup turns out to be, put a reminder on your phone to check that battery reading on the first of every month. A dead safe at 3 a.m. is just a locked box.

INSIDE ROOM:

XDeer gives 12.8 inches deep, 9.45 inches wide and 3.43 inches high, at 0.09 cubic feet, and the seller uses those same figures for both the outside and the inside. They can’t both be right. The inside has to be smaller than the outside, so treat those numbers as a ceiling, not a promise.

The depth is fine for most compact and full-size pistols lying flat. The height is where folks get in trouble. A pistol with a red dot, a weapon light or an extended magazine may not clear. Measure your gun at its tallest point, set up the way you keep it, and leave room for any lining. The listing doesn’t say whether the inside has foam or a tray.

The seller also mentions jewelry, passports and cash, and every one of those takes room away from the gun and a spare magazine. XDeer lists an interior sensor light too, which helps you see what you’re reaching for in a dark room.

BUILD & STEEL:

The seller calls the body carbon steel, and the spec sheet says alloy steel. Neither one comes with a steel gauge, a bolt design or a third-party security rating. XDeer also lists an alarm and a locking mechanism meant to prevent accidental opening, without much detail on either. The angled shot shows how low and wide the box sits.

I won’t call this a vault. It keeps kids and curious hands out, and it slows down a smash-and-grab. That’s the job a bedside box is built for. No fire or water rating is listed, so don’t put papers in it you can’t replace.

MOUNTING:

XDeer lists the weight at 5.77 kilograms, about 12.7 pounds. That’s heavy enough to feel solid and light enough for a burglar to walk out with under one arm. The steel cable and the two expansion screws are there to fix that. In the photos you can see the cable looped behind the box on a nightstand, with the power cord plugged in at the back.

Loop the cable around something that can’t be lifted off, like a bed frame, or screw the base down if your furniture allows it. As an old lawman, I’ll tell you a cable won’t stop a man with bolt cutters. It will stop the quick grab-and-go, and that’s the kind of theft a bedside box is up against.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

Once it’s placed, practice. Lights off, starting from lying down, five times in a row. If you can’t open it smoothly in the dark, it’s in the wrong spot or set up wrong.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The fingerprint reader usually responds quickly, PIN and key serve as reliable backups, the electronic lock is smooth, the unit is sized well for a nightstand, and the built-in wireless phone charger on top is handy when it works.

Where it falls short: The wireless charger frequently does not work or overheats the phone on a meaningful share of units, the fingerprint scanner sometimes needs several attempts to register, and some units arrive without a manual or with cosmetic scuffs.

Who it’s for: Anyone who mainly wants reliable fingerprint and code access for a bedside pistol and treats the charger as a bonus; skip it if phone charging is the main reason you are buying.

WHAT TO WATCH:

Three things. The 3.43-inch height limits pistols with optics or lights. The power details are thin, so learn the battery and the key before you trust it. And the lock methods are listed two different ways, so the manual gets the final word.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you want one box on the nightstand that charges your phone, shows the time and locks up a pistol, and you have an outlet close by. At the time of writing it sat in the $100 to $200 range. Skip it if you want a no-battery mechanical box, a fire rating, or something small enough to toss in a backpack.

XDeer Wireless Charging Biometric Safe FAQ

Does the XDeer safe charge a phone wirelessly?

The seller describes a 15W wireless charging pad plus one USB output. Charging speed depends on your phone, its case and how you set it down, and the listing doesn’t say whether the pad works when the unit is unplugged.

Will my handgun fit in the XDeer Wireless Charging Biometric Safe?

XDeer lists 12.8 by 9.45 by 3.43 inches. Depth suits most pistols laid flat, but the height is tight for guns with optics, lights or extended magazines. Measure your gun’s tallest point before you order.

How is the XDeer safe powered?

An adapter and a data line come in the box, and the display shows battery level, but the listing doesn’t give the battery type or runtime. Check the manual, and make sure you know where the key is if the electronics quit.

How do I mount the XDeer biometric safe?

A steel security cable, two expansion screws and a hex screwdriver are included. Loop the cable around a bed frame or other fixed point, or screw the base down where your furniture allows.

What if the fingerprint reader won’t read my finger?

Use the code, and if the electronics are dead, the key. Enroll the same finger several times at different angles to cut down on misreads, and keep the key away from the nightstand and out of children’s reach.
