TOPMEDA Large Biometric Pistol Safe Review: An Instructor’s Take On This Roomy Box — Reviewed by Massad Ayoob, Tested by Chris Raper

In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

When a husband and wife take my class together, I can count on a question at the break: we’ve got more than one handgun, so do we need two bedside boxes? Not always. A wider box like the TOPMEDA Large Biometric Pistol Safe is built for exactly that household.

My verdict: it’s a roomy, fair-priced fingerprint box with a PIN, a key and a USB-C lifeline for dead batteries. The listing leaves out the inside height, the weight and the steel gauge, so go in with a tape measure and modest expectations.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

TOPMEDA Large Biometric Pistol Safe – Best Roomy Biometric Pistol Safe Under $100

HIGHLIGHT:

Fingerprint, PIN and key access, an interior TOPMEDA lists at up to 12.5 by 10.5 inches, and USB-C emergency power, under $100 at the time of writing.

FRONT PANEL & KEYPAD:

Everything you touch sits on the front edge. In the photos you can see a small LCD window on the left, a row of six number keys, and a square fingerprint pad on the right end. The lid is plain, with a chrome badge across the middle.

Our hands-on photoTOPMEDA biometric pistol safe on an open nightstand shelf

One shot shows it on an open nightstand shelf with the keypad facing out, and that’s the setup I’d want. Your hand comes straight in from the bedside instead of reaching over the top. Keep the front clear. A lamp or a stack of books in front of the reader costs you time when you can least spare it.

FINGERPRINT READER:

The title says the reader holds 100 sets of fingerprints. TOPMEDA also lists high-resolution scanning, a self-learning reader, and sensor glass with a diamond-like coating to resist scratches. That last one is a durability claim, not an accuracy claim. They also say it unlocks one-handed in 0.1 seconds. That number is marketing. Any reader slows down with a dry, wet or cold finger, so treat it as a goal, not a promise.

Our hands-on photoThumb on the TOPMEDA safe fingerprint pad with the keypad lit blue

The close-up shows a thumb on the square pad at the end of the lit keypad. I teach the same trick for every biometric box: enroll the same finger several times at different angles, flat, tipped up and rolled a little to each side. Half asleep, your hand won’t land the way it did at the kitchen table when you set the thing up. Spend a handful of those 100 slots on the finger you’ll actually reach with, then give each adult who should have access a few of their own, and nobody who shouldn’t.

PIN, KEY & SILENT MODE:

The PIN and the key are your fallbacks. Pick a PIN that isn’t a birthday or the last four of your phone number. Burglars and teenagers both know those.

Then the key. I say it in every class: the backup key does not live in the same drawer as the safe, and it never lives where a child can find it. Put it on your key ring or in a second locked spot. A safe with the key sitting next to it is just a box with a lid.

The listing also mentions a silent mode. In a bedroom, that matters. You don’t want to tell the whole house, or whoever just came into it, that you opened the gun box. The listing doesn’t say how you turn it on, so learn it from the manual, and make sure you can still tell when a print or a code has registered.

INSIDE ROOM:

Room is the reason to look at this box. TOPMEDA says the interior measures up to 12.5 by 10.5 inches and lists it for one large handgun, two standard pistols or three small ones, plus magazines and accessories. That’s generous for this price range.

Two pistols and a spare magazine in the TOPMEDA safe foam
Our hands-on photoTwo pistols and a spare magazine in the TOPMEDA safe foam

In the photos you can see two pistols laid side by side in the foam with a spare magazine between them, and another shot with a single pistol and magazine with the lid standing open. What the listing doesn’t give is the inside height, and height decides what fits in nearly every bedside box. The words “up to” also make me think the inside may not be one clean rectangle. Measure your gun at its tallest point, light and optic included, and check it against the listing’s dimension photos before you order.

PADDING & INSIDE LIGHT:

TOPMEDA calls the interior fully padded, adjustable and anti-scratch. The photos show egg-crate foam inside, so the gun isn’t lying on bare metal. Being able to rearrange the padding helps you set it up around your own guns instead of somebody else’s.

The listing also mentions an internal light, and in several shots you can see the inside glowing blue with the lid up. At night, a light inside the box means you can see what you’re picking up without switching on a lamp and waking the house.

BUILD & STEEL:

The seller describes a thickened, hardened steel shell, a U-shaped lock it says resists prying with common hand tools, and a patented side design meant to soak up drop impact. What it doesn’t give is a steel gauge, hinge details, a weight or any certification. So I can’t stack it up against other boxes on paper, and I won’t pretend it’s a vault.

The photos also show it sitting on a cluttered workbench among hand tools. Think of it as a box that keeps kids, visitors and a quick snatch out, not a rated security container. No fire or water rating is listed either, so don’t keep papers in it. If you want a named steel thickness, the Hornady Lockbox is listed at 16 gauge.

POWER:

Power is where this box shows more thought than most. TOPMEDA says it ships with AA batteries already installed and claims months of standby. If the batteries run flat, an outside USB-C port gives emergency power long enough to get in.

TOPMEDA also lists an LCD that shows the time and battery life. In the photos you can see the readout glowing with the time on it, right beside the lit number keys. A battery level you can read at a glance takes some of the guesswork out of changing cells.

That USB-C port only helps if you have a cable and a power source handy. Keep a short cable and a small power bank in a known spot outside the box, not inside it. And don’t wait for the screen to warn you. Put a reminder on your phone to check the battery level on the first of every month, and run the print, the PIN and the key while you’re at it. A dead safe at 3 a.m. is just a locked box.

MOUNTING & PLACEMENT:

TOPMEDA includes a 3mm reinforced steel cable and lists the box for bedroom, nightstand and car use. The listing mentions a mounting option but doesn’t spell out the hardware, so check what’s in the carton. As an old lawman, my first thought on any small box is the burglar who tucks it under his arm on the way out. Loop the cable around a bed frame or a seat bracket. It won’t stop bolt cutters, but it stops the grab-and-go.

In a vehicle, think about heat. Electronics and batteries don’t care for a sealed car in a North Carolina July, so I’d bring it inside when you park for long stretches.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

One photo shows it open on a carpeted floor with a bare foot at the edge of the frame, and that gives you a feel for the footprint. This is a wider box than the slim nightstand models. Measure your nightstand top or shelf, and leave room above it for the lid to swing all the way up.

Then practice opening it the way I teach students to practice a draw: lights off, starting from lying down, five times in a row. If you can’t do it smoothly in the dark, it’s in the wrong spot or set up wrong.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The TOPMEDA feels well built and heavy-duty for the price, with fast and consistent fingerprint access, a useful interior light, and three unlock methods: key, code or fingerprint.

Where it falls short: The interior does not hold as many pistols as the listing claims. The fingerprint and passcode setup buttons are hidden inside the box and not explained in the instructions, and on some units the door does not spring open on its own after unlocking.

Who it’s for: Solid build and multiple unlock options for one pistol with a magazine or two. Skip it if you are counting on it holding several full-size handguns as advertised.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The missing numbers are the big one. No inside height, no weight, no steel gauge, no fire rating. The brand is also harder to size up from a listing than the long-standing names, and the speed and durability claims come from the seller alone.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you keep two handguns, or one large one with spare magazines, at the bedside or in the car, and you want fingerprint access under a hundred dollars. Skip it if you want a well-documented maker, a certified safe for an insurance policy, or a lock with no electronics at all. For battery-free, the V-Line Slide-Away uses a mechanical push-button lock.
