In addition to my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week, this guide was reviewed by Massad Ayoob of Massad Ayoob Group, whose opinion appears below. [Keep only if true — Chris: I handled the product(s) on this page myself. Details are in the test record at the end.] The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

In my years wearing a badge, the stolen guns I heard about mostly came off a closet shelf, out from under a mattress or off a truck seat. Rarely out of anything with a lock on it. When a student asks me what the cheapest real fix is, I tell him to put a locked steel door between the gun and the world. The KAER 5-6 Gun Quick Access Safe is one of the cabinets built for that job.

My verdict: it’s a tall, slim keypad cabinet for a handful of long guns and a pistol or two, with a keyed drawer at the bottom and an external power box for dead batteries. It fits a closet corner and a $200 to $300 budget, as long as you bolt it down and don’t need a fire rating.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

KAER 5-6 Gun Quick Access Safe – Best Keypad Long Gun Cabinet With a Drawer

HIGHLIGHT:

A 55-inch keypad cabinet sold for 5 to 6 guns, with a movable rack, a movable partition, an LED light and a lower drawer.

OUT OF THE BOX:

KAER says the cabinet arrives pre-assembled, so there’s no flat-pack puzzle on the garage floor. The listing puts two master keys, two drawer keys, four expansion bolts, an external battery box and a manual in the package.

The shipping box is about as tall as the cabinet. In the photos you can see one standing upright in a hallway, a pair of them side by side in a garage, and one opened up with the corner protectors still in place. A cabinet that size is a two-person carry. Don’t try to wrestle it up the stairs by yourself and end up in the emergency room before the guns are even put away.

FRONT PANEL & KEYPAD:

The front is plain: a round keypad up top and a key lock with the handle below it. One close-up shows the keypad lit blue with a key sitting in the lock. Another shows a hand holding a sealed accessory bag in front of the keypad, which is about where the setup starts.

The seller describes three ways in: a keypad password, a key, and the external power box. There’s also a silent mode that the seller says cuts down the keypad noise. In a bedroom closet, that matters. You don’t want to tell the whole house, or whoever just came into it, that you opened the gun cabinet.

I tell every class the same thing about codes: no birthdays, no anniversaries, nothing a teenager could guess. Set it, practice it a dozen times, and punch it in with your body between the keypad and the room.

KEYS & BACKUP POWER:

Two master keys and two separate drawer keys come in the package, which points to the drawer having its own lock. Store a master key outside the cabinet and well away from children. A cabinet with the key hanging in the lock is just a closet with extra steps.

The external battery box is the part I like. If the internal batteries run out, it lets you power the keypad from outside so the cabinet doesn’t turn into a problem in the middle of the night. The listing doesn’t state the keypad’s battery type or how long the batteries last, so check the manual, and know that the LED light runs off the same system. Change batteries on a schedule instead of waiting for trouble. I’d put a reminder on my phone for the first of every month and test the keypad, the keys and the power box every time.

BUILD & STEEL:

The listing calls the body alloy steel, and the description also says cold-rolled steel. It calls the construction high-strength and anti-theft. What it doesn’t give is a steel gauge, a certification, or any fire or water rating. So don’t buy it as a fire safe.

As an old lawman, my first thought on any cabinet like this is the thief with ten minutes and a pry bar. A cabinet that’s bolted down makes him work for it. One that isn’t anchored can leave with your guns still inside. That’s why the four expansion bolts in the box matter more than any word on the listing.

INSIDE ROOM:

KAER lists the outside at 55.12 inches tall, 14.17 inches wide and 11.02 inches deep. The seller describes an upper compartment for long guns and handguns, and a lower drawer. The capacity claim moves around, though. The title and description say 5 to 6 guns, while one bullet says the main space takes four to five long guns. Treat it as a range, not a promise.

The title mentions AR15s, but the listing gives no interior height or width. In the photos you can see an AR-style rifle with an optic standing in the rack, which helps. It doesn’t tell you how your rifle, your scope and three more guns will share the room. Measure your widest gun at its widest point, and your longest one with the optic on, before you order.

RACK & PARTITION:

The seller lists a movable gun rack and a movable partition, so you can lay the inside out for what you own. The close-up shows two notched rack bars on the felt-lined wall and a slotted rail along the side, with pistol pockets on the back of the door. The listing doesn’t mention the door pockets, so go by what’s in your box.

Another shot shows a hand on one of the rack bars up inside the cabinet. Set the rack where your guns sit straight and don’t lean on each other. Optics, slings and bulky stocks are what eat into the real count, so load the biggest gun first and fit the rest around it.

DRAWER:

The lower drawer is listed at about 3.93 inches high, 11 inches wide and 10 inches deep. That’s room for flat things: magazines, a pistol, papers or small accessories, not bulky gear. In the photos you can see the drawer’s key lock with a pair of keys in it, and the drawer pulled open below a loaded cabinet.

With two drawer keys in the box, check the manual for how the drawer locks and whether it needs its own key every time. With children in the house, I like ammunition locked up apart from the guns when you can manage it. A drawer with its own lock is a decent spot for that.

MOUNTING & PLACEMENT:

Pre-assembled doesn’t mean done. The seller says the four expansion bolts will hold it to a wall or floor. A cabinet over four and a half feet tall and only 11 inches deep can tip, and a cabinet full of rifles coming down on a child is its own danger. Find studs or solid concrete before you open the box, make sure the door swings all the way open, and keep the keypad out of line of sight from a window.

Concrete is the easiest surface to anchor into. If you’re on carpet over a wood subfloor, check what the bolts actually bite into before you trust them.

If you have children in the house, this part isn’t optional. North Carolina’s safe-storage law (G.S. 14-315.1) can put you in court if a child gets hold of a loaded gun you left within reach and something happens with it. Other states have their own versions.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY:

Where it earns its keep: The KAER 5-6 Gun Quick Access Safe arrives fully assembled and ready to use, feels heavy and sturdy, has a spacious interior with a removable shelf and drawer, and offers convenient keypad access.

Where it falls short: It is not fireproof. Realistic capacity is 2-4 rifles or shotguns, fewer with scopes or muzzle brakes attached, and it is not tall enough for some military-surplus-length rifles. Resetting the default combination can be troublesome.

Who it’s for: A quick-access, pre-assembled cabinet for 2-4 long guns. Do not count on the full 5-6 gun rated capacity.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The missing numbers are the big one: no interior dimensions, no steel gauge, no battery type and no fire rating. The gun count runs from four to six depending on which line of the listing you read. The seller also says after-sales help is there around the clock. I can’t vouch for that, so read recent buyer comments about parts and support before you lean on it.

WHO SHOULD BUY IT:

Buy it if you have a few long guns and a pistol or two, you want a keypad with keys and an outside power box behind it, and you like the idea of a separate drawer. Skip it if you want fingerprint entry, fire protection or room for a big collection. KAER’s bigger biometric cabinets or a full gun safe make more sense there.

KAER 5-6 Gun Quick Access Safe FAQ

How many guns does the KAER 5-6 Gun Quick Access Safe hold?

The title and description say 5 to 6 guns, while one seller bullet says four to five long guns. Scopes, slings and wide stocks bring the real count down, so measure your largest firearm and ask in the Q and A if you own scoped rifles.

What if the keypad batteries run out?

Use the external power box or a master key. The battery type isn’t listed, so check the manual and change batteries on a schedule.

How do I mount the KAER 5-6?

Use the four expansion bolts that come in the box. The seller says it can go to a wall or floor. Pick solid concrete or studs, because a cabinet this tall can tip if it’s left loose.

What is the drawer for and how big is it?

It’s listed as separate storage for accessories and gun-related items, at about 3.93 inches high, 11 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Two drawer keys are included. Check the manual for how the drawer locks.

Does the KAER 5-6 have a fire rating?

No fire rating is listed, so don’t assume one. If fire protection matters, look for a product with a clearly stated, independent fire rating.
