Best Wall Mount Gun Safe: 7 Slider and Drop-Down Pistol Safes for Bedside and Closet — Reviewed by Chris Raper

This guide draws on my own research and what my students bring into the Concealed Handgun Carry class every week. The method line at the end of the article says exactly how this guide was built.

If you want a pistol safe that hangs on a wall or the side of a nightstand and hands you the gun grip-first, start with the Vaultek Slider Series: a door that glides out on a three-point rail system, a backlit 5-digit keypad with two manual keys, a 16-gauge carbon steel body per the seller, and an ambidextrous mounting plate that also takes standard VESA 75 and 100 mm hole patterns. If you want a fingerprint reader on a heavier box, the Langger Biometric Slider Gun Safe lists 12.4 pounds of 16-gauge steel and mounts from the top, left or right.

The question I hear most in the storage block of my concealed carry class is where the gun should be at night. The answer is somewhere your hand can find in the dark and a child’s hand can’t. A box screwed to the wall, the side of the bed frame or the inside of a closet does both, and unlike a loose box on a shelf, it doesn’t leave the house under somebody’s arm. These are surface-mounted safes; if you want a box recessed between the studs, see our best in-wall gun safe guide instead.

FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

How we chose

We did not lab-test these safes. Every pick here has its own full review on our site, built from the maker’s listing, our own product photographs for most of them, and the questions my students ask about bedside storage. For this guide I weighted the things that matter most on a wall: a mounting system that goes into solid backing, a door that presents the grip instead of making you dig, at least two independent ways in with a non-electronic backup, and enough room for a real carry gun. I flag every spec a listing leaves out.

A word on what these are. A surface-mounted pistol safe keeps a handgun out of a child’s reach and stops a quick grab. It is not a burglary safe, and none of these list a fire rating. The screws you drive into the wall are a big part of the security.

1. Vaultek Slider Series – Best Overall Wall Mount Gun Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

A door that glides out on rails and presents one pistol, optic included, up to 8.875 inches long.

MOUNTING:

Vaultek includes an ambidextrous mounting plate and hardware, and the seller says the plate also fits standard VESA 75 mm and 100 mm hole patterns, the same patterns used on monitor and TV mounts. That gives you a clean way to hang it beside a bed, under a desk or on a closet wall. On a wall, find a stud or use anchors rated for the load.

ACCESS & POWER:

A backlit 5-digit keypad and two manual keys. Vaultek lists four AAA batteries (not included) and a power cable. The model on this listing has no fingerprint reader; if you want one, see the NSL2i below.

BUILD:

Carbon steel that the seller describes as 16 gauge, an Anti-Impact Latch, a three-point rail with ball-bearing guides, a foam holster and an interior LED. Outside it measures 11.25 by 2.6 by 9.1 inches, slim enough for the gap between a mattress and a wall.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: smooth rail-mounted door; VESA-compatible plate; optic-ready foam holster; key backup
  • Cons: one pistol and one magazine only; no fingerprint reader on this model

2. Langger Biometric Slider Gun Safe – Best Heavy-Duty Biometric Wall Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

A 12.4-pound, 16-gauge steel slider that mounts from the top, left or right, or stands upright on the floor.

ACCESS:

Fingerprint, PIN or a manual key, with silent mode and a PIN lockout after three wrong tries, per Langger. Enroll your main finger several times at the angle your hand actually arrives from bed, not the angle you used standing over it.

FIT & BUILD:

Langger lists a handgun up to 9.5 inches long plus one spare magazine in dense foam, and an outside size of 10.1 by 3.5 by 11.8 inches. At 12.4 pounds it’s one of the heavier boxes in this class, which is good on a wall stud and bad on drywall alone.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The listing doesn’t name the battery type or give inside dimensions. Find the battery spec in the manual and set a reminder to change them, and measure any pistol with a light or optic before you order.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: heavy 16-gauge steel per seller; three mounting orientations; fingerprint, PIN and key; lockout after wrong tries
  • Cons: battery type and interior size not listed; one handgun only

3. HOLEWOR Drop-Down Biometric Safe – Best Drop-Down Door

HIGHLIGHT:

A door that drops open on its own after a fingerprint or code, with memory for up to 100 prints.

ACCESS & POWER:

HOLEWOR lists up to 100 fingerprints, 10 passwords and backup keys, four AAA batteries and an emergency USB-C input. The beep can be turned off, which I’d do in a bedroom. An LCD shows temperature, humidity and battery level, and an LED lights the inside for about ten seconds after it opens.

FIT & MOUNTING:

The outside is 15 by 7.5 by only 3 inches deep, and HOLEWOR includes four mounting screws. With 3 inches outside, plan on a slim or compact pistol and measure anything with a light. Mount it so the grip lands where your shooting hand arrives without crossing your body.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: self-opening drop-down door; three ways in plus USB-C emergency power; humidity readout
  • Cons: shallow interior; no inside dimensions or steel gauge listed

4. Vaultek Slider NSL2i – Best Smart Wall Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

The Slider layout with a fingerprint reader, a backlit keypad, a key and phone-app alerts.

ACCESS & SMART FEATURES:

The listing describes a biometric scanner, a 5-digit backlit keypad and a backup manual key, plus app features that need a WiFi connection and the AC adapter. If you want a log of when the safe was opened, this is the one on the list that offers it.

FIT & MOUNTING:

Same envelope as the Slider Series: a pistol up to 8.875 inches overall including an optic, plus one spare magazine, in 16-gauge carbon steel per the seller, with a mounting plate that supports VESA 75 and 100 mm patterns. Keep it within reach of an outlet if you want the smart features running.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: fingerprint, keypad and key; app alerts; optic-ready; VESA-compatible plate
  • Cons: smart features need WiFi and AC power; one pistol only

5. XDeer Biometric Slider Safe – Best Budget Biometric Wall Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

Fingerprint, a 3- to 6-digit PIN and two backup keys on a slim drawer safe with the bracket in the box.

FIT & MOUNTING:

XDeer lists the outside at 2.6 by 9.1 by 12.4 inches, 0.15 cubic foot inside, and a handgun up to 8.5 inches plus a spare magazine. A mounting bracket, two thumb screws and four expansion screws come in the box, and it mounts left, right or upright.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The listing doesn’t give the battery type or mention an emergency USB port, so the keys are your only non-battery way in. Try both keys before the gun goes in, and keep them away from the box.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: slim; three ways in; bracket and screws included; pistol rack inside
  • Cons: 8.5-inch limit; battery details not listed

6. VoleStay Hidden Slider Gun Safe – Best Budget Slide-Out

HIGHLIGHT:

Fingerprint, PIN and key on a 2.6-inch-wide steel slider that mounts on the left or right side of a flat surface.

FIT & BUILD:

VoleStay lists 12.6 by 9.1 by 2.6 inches, 10 pounds, steel it describes as 16 gauge, up to 20 fingerprints, a 4- to 8-digit PIN, and room for a handgun up to 9.5 inches plus one magazine.

WHAT TO WATCH:

No cable is listed, so the screws are what keep it on the wall. Drive them into solid wood or a stud. The battery type isn’t stated and no USB port is mentioned, so the keys matter here.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: 9.5-inch capacity in a 2.6-inch-wide body; three ways in; left or right mounting
  • Cons: battery details not listed; no emergency power port mentioned

7. RPNB Wall-Mounted Pistol Safe – Best Budget Keypad Wall Safe

HIGHLIGHT:

A slim vertical keypad box with a drop-down drawer that presents the grip and mounts from the left, right or top.

THE DRAWER:

RPNB describes a drop-down drawer that puts the pistol in a ready position, grip first, which is the right way for a gun to meet your hand. The keypad sits on the end your hand finds first when the box is mounted.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The listing leaves out the interior size, the battery and any backup key or override. Get those three answered before you order. Plan on a compact handgun, not a full-size pistol with a light.

PROS & CONS:

  • Pros: grip-first drop-down drawer; three mounting sides; low cost
  • Cons: no backup key described; interior size and battery not listed

Hidden wall pieces are not safes

Students show me the wall sign with a pistol behind it and the picture frame with a compartment, and ask if those count. They’re hiding places. The Bellewood Designs hidden gun safe sign opens with a magnetic key, and the Dononr picture-frame shelf closes with a magnet and no lock at all. In an adults-only home that just wants a gun out of sight, they have a place. With children in the house, use one of the locked safes above. Our best hidden gun safe guide covers the options that lock.

How to choose the best wall mount gun safe

Mount into something solid

A wall safe is only as secure as what it’s fastened to. Drive screws into a stud, solid wood furniture or a bed frame, not drywall or thin particleboard. If the screws in the box are short or cheap, buy better ones. Our how to bolt down a gun safe guide covers anchors and fasteners.

Pick the spot before the safe

Lie in bed, reach without looking, and note where your shooting hand lands. That’s where the grip should be. Then check that a child standing on the floor can’t reach it, and that the door or drawer has room to open fully against the wall.

Two ways in, one without batteries

Fingerprint readers miss with wet or cold fingers; keypads need batteries. Pick a safe with a mechanical key, keep that key on your person or in a second locked spot, and change the batteries on a schedule. Read our are biometric gun safes reliable and biometric safe recall pages before buying any fingerprint safe.

Measure the gun with everything on it

Most slider and drop-down safes take one pistol of a stated length. Measure yours with any light, optic or extended magazine, and compare against the seller’s limit, not the outside size of the box.

Practice the reach

With the gun out and the box empty, practice opening it from bed with the lights off, five times in a row. If you fumble, move the box or change the method.

Key takeaway: the best wall mount gun safe is screwed into a stud where your hand lands from bed and a child’s hand can’t, opens two ways including a key, and fits your actual gun. Storage and child-access laws vary by state; check yours.

Best Wall Mount Gun Safe FAQ

What is the best wall mount gun safe?

The Vaultek Slider Series is our top pick for its rail-mounted door, backlit keypad with two keys, optic-ready foam holster and VESA-compatible mounting plate. For a fingerprint reader on a heavier box, look at the Langger Biometric Slider.

Can a wall mount gun safe go on drywall?

Not by drywall alone. Fasten it into a stud, solid furniture or a bed frame, or use anchors rated for the weight of the safe and the gun. A safe hanging from drywall screws can be pulled off by hand.

Is a wall safe better than an in-wall safe?

A surface-mounted safe is easier to install and to reach from bed; an in-wall safe sits between the studs and is harder to spot. See our in-wall gun safe guide for recessed options.

Do wall mount gun safes have a fire rating?

None of the picks here lists a fire rating. They are quick-access boxes. For fire protection, see our fireproof gun safe guide.

How high should I mount a gun safe on the wall?

High enough that a small child can’t reach it, and placed where your hand lands from bed without searching. Teenagers can reach most places, so the lock, not the height, is what keeps them out.
