A sight pusher clamps your pistol slide and pushes a dovetailed sight sideways with a screw instead of a hammer and punch. It is the difference between a 10-minute sight change at the kitchen table and a slide that comes back from the gunsmith with a new scratch. We compared 14 of the most-bought handgun sight pusher tools on clamp design, push block material, included shoes and the slides owners report they actually fit. The bestseller is not the best one, and the gunsmith tool is overkill for most people.
FYI, prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.
Our top picks at a glance
- Best overall: Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – captures the whole slide, steel push block, angled and flat shoes included.
- Best budget universal: Patch Heavy Duty Universal Dovetail Rear Sight Pusher – the Amazon bestseller; fine for a few sight changes if you grease the screw.
- Best for Glock only: Pridefend Sight Pusher for Glock Square Slides – fits Glock slides better than most universals because it does not try to fit anything else.
- Best all-steel: TRUGLO Steel Rear and Front Sight Installation Tool – no frame flex on seized M&P and Sig sights.
- Best Glock front-and-rear: Real Avid Universal Glock Sight Pusher – the only Glock tool here that also handles dovetailed front sights.
- Gunsmith grade: MGW Glock Angled Sight Installation Tool – machined, model-specific, the shop standard.

How we chose
We did not rank by review count. The bestselling pusher has over 6,000 reviews because it is the cheapest, not because it is the best. Instead we looked at four things that decide whether a sight pusher works or wrecks something: how the clamp holds the slide (one side, two sides, or full capture), what the push block is made of (aluminum blocks deform, steel does not), which shoes ship in the box (an angled shoe for Glock-style sights, a flat shoe for Sig, M&P and XD), and the slides owners report fitting. We also read the one- to three-star reviews on every tool for the failure pattern. Across the budget tier it is always the same: stripped push-screw threads and a clamp that slips on rounded slides.
1. Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – best overall

HIGHLIGHT:
Wheeler’s Armorer’s Handgun Sight Tool is the most-reviewed name-brand pusher on Amazon and the one most home users should buy.

CARRY & HANDLING:
Wheeler’s Armorer’s Handgun Sight Tool is the most-reviewed name-brand pusher on Amazon and the one most home users should buy. The frame captures the entire slide from both sides, so the slide cannot rock or walk under load. The push block is steel, the jaws have polymer pads, and both an angled (Glock) and flat shoe come in the box. It handles dovetailed front sights too.
WHAT TO WATCH:
What owners complain about: the manual is thin, and the first-generation push screw tip could mar a sight if you pushed on the blade instead of the body. Set the shoe on the sight body, degrease the dovetail, and it is a three-minute job. Full setup walkthrough in our Wheeler sight tool review.

2. Patch Heavy Duty Universal Dovetail Rear Sight Pusher – best budget universal
HIGHLIGHT:
This is the Amazon bestseller, and for most first-time users it is fine.
FIT & CAPACITY:
This is the Amazon bestseller, and for most first-time users it is fine. It clamps from both sides, includes a flat shoe and an angled insert, and fits the majority of flat-sided slides. Where it fails is predictable: on a truly seized sight (M&P 2.0, some Sigs) the push screw threads strip before the sight moves, and on rounded slides like the P320 the clamp can slip.
WHAT TO WATCH:
Two habits double its life: a dab of grease on the push screw threads, and heat plus penetrating oil on a stuck dovetail before you push. If your pistols are Glocks, Taurus, Canik or anything that does not press sights in tight, this is enough tool. Owner complaints and fixes in our Patch universal sight pusher review.
3. Pridefend Sight Pusher for Glock Square Slides – best for Glock only

HIGHLIGHT:
Universal pushers are a compromise.

FIT & CAPACITY:
Universal pushers are a compromise. This one is not: it is cut for Glock square slides and ships with the angled shoe Glock OEM and most aftermarket rear sights need. Because it does not try to fit a rounded Sig slide, it clamps a Glock square and does not rock. Over a thousand owners, and the complaints are mostly people who tried to use it on a non-Glock.
CARRY & HANDLING:
Watch two things: Gen 5 front serrations (clamp behind them) and slimline G43/43X/48 slides, where a fixed clamp can sit off-center. For slimlines, Pridefend’s adjustable-base universal is the better buy. See our best sight pusher for Glock guide for the model-by-model list.

4. TRUGLO Steel Rear and Front Sight Installation Tool – best all-steel

HIGHLIGHT:
Everyone argues Wheeler versus MGW and skips this one.

BUILD:
Everyone argues Wheeler versus MGW and skips this one. TRUGLO’s sight tool is steel where the budget tools are aluminum, which is exactly what you want when an M&P 2.0 rear sight refuses to move. It does front and rear, fits most handguns, and the 600-plus owner reviews have very few stripped-thread stories. The trade-off is weight and a plainer shoe set.

5. Real Avid Universal Glock Sight Pusher – best Glock front-and-rear

HIGHLIGHT:
Most Glock pushers only do the rear sight, because Glock front sights are screw-in.

CARRY & HANDLING:
Most Glock pushers only do the rear sight, because Glock front sights are screw-in. But if you run an aftermarket dovetailed front sight, or you also own pistols with dovetail fronts, Real Avid’s tool covers both ends. It ships with the Glock angled shoe and clamps most other slides. It is the “one tool for a mixed safe that is mostly Glocks” answer.
More detail is in our full Real Avid Universal Glock Sight Pusher review.

6. Pridefend Universal Sight Pusher with adjustable base – best for slim slides
HIGHLIGHT:
The one setting that decides whether a universal pusher works is clamp height.
FIT & CAPACITY:
The one setting that decides whether a universal pusher works is clamp height. Fixed-height clamps fit “average” slides; on a Glock 43X, Hellcat or Shield the shoe lands on the slide instead of the sight. Pridefend’s universal has an adjustable base so you can dial the height to the slide in front of you. It is newer and has fewer reviews than the Glock-only tool, but it solves the slimline problem the budget universals do not.
7. NcSTAR VISM VTUFNR Universal Front and Rear Sight Tool – budget front-and-rear

HIGHLIGHT:
Most budget pushers are rear-only.

VALUE:
Most budget pushers are rear-only. VISM’s does front and rear on most pistols for budget money. The construction is aluminum, so it is not the tool for a seized sight, but as a first pusher for a Taurus, Canik or Glock it does the job. See our best budget sight pusher guide for how it compares to the Patch.

8. MGW Glock Angled Sight Installation Tool – gunsmith grade

HIGHLIGHT:
MGW makes the Sight-Pro that most gun shops use.

CARRY & HANDLING:
MGW makes the Sight-Pro that most gun shops use. That tool is sold through Midway and Brownells, not Amazon, but MGW’s Glock-specific angled sight tool is on Amazon and it is the same philosophy: machined steel, a model-specific shoe, zero flex. If you change sights often or you are pushing expensive tritium sights and do not want to risk the vial, this is the Glock tool to own. For one pistol it is more than you need. Full look in our MGW Glock sight tool review.

How to choose a sight pusher

Clamp design
One-sided clamps let the slide tilt. Two-sided clamps are the minimum. Full slide capture (Wheeler) is the best, because the pushing force cannot rotate the slide at all. If a listing photo shows the slide held by a single screw from one side, keep scrolling.
Push block material
Aluminum push blocks deform and aluminum screw threads strip. A steel push block and a steel screw are the single biggest upgrade from budget to mid-tier. “Heavy duty” in an Amazon title usually just means aluminum; look at the specs.
Shoes
Glock OEM and most aftermarket Glock rear sights have an angled back face and need an angled shoe. Sig, M&P, XD and most others are flat-backed and need a flat shoe. A flat shoe on an angled sight slips or crushes it. Make sure the tool ships with the shoe your sights need, and if you have a mixed safe, both.
Front sights
Glock, M&P and most Sig front sights are screw-in from under the slide; a pusher is not involved. 1911, CZ and some HK front sights are dovetailed and need a pusher with a front adapter. Do not pay for front-sight capability you will never use.
Slide shape
“Square slide” tools fit Glock and other flat-sided slides. Rounded slides (Sig P320, 1911 variants) need a universal clamp. Slim slides (G43X, Hellcat, Shield) need an adjustable-height clamp. Our universal sight pusher guide has the slide-by-slide list.

Do you actually need a sight pusher?
If you own one pistol and will change its sights once, a brass punch, a bench block and patience will do it, and we show how in how to remove a rear sight without a sight pusher. The pusher becomes worth it the moment you are pushing a tritium night sight you paid real money for, fighting a seized M&P or Sig sight, or own more than one pistol. A single slip with a punch costs more in slide refinishing than any tool on this page. Our longer answer is in is a sight pusher worth it.

Watch: “Wheeler Engineering Armorer’s Handgun Sight Tool. Use & Overview” by The Gun Bench on YouTube.
Using a sight pusher without scratching the slide
Field strip and clear the pistol. Loosen any set screw under the rear sight (Novak-style and many aftermarket sights have one). Degrease the dovetail with brake cleaner on a patch. Put two layers of painter’s tape on the slide top and sides. Clamp behind the front serrations, snug then a quarter turn. Seat the shoe on the sight body, never on the blade. Turn the push screw until the sight moves, stop, check the shoe is still seated, continue. Step-by-step photos in how to use a sight pusher, and if your new sight shoots off-center, which way to move the rear sight explains the FORS rule.

Frequently asked questions
Is a sight pusher worth it?
For two or more pistols, or any night sight you do not want to crack, yes. For one steel sight on one pistol, a brass punch and bench block can do it if you are careful.
Which sight pusher is best rated?
By review count, the Patch universal. By design, the Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool, which captures the whole slide and uses a steel push block. Review counts mostly track price.
Do sight pushers work on front sights?
Only on dovetailed front sights (1911, CZ, some HK). Glock, M&P and most Sig front sights are screw-in and are removed with a nut driver, not a pusher.
Is there a universal pistol sight pusher?
Several tools are sold as universal. The ones that are universal in practice have a two-sided or full-capture clamp, an adjustable or generous clamp height, and both angled and flat shoes. The Wheeler and the Pridefend adjustable-base tool come closest.
What is the best tool for removing pistol sights?
A sight pusher for the rear sight on almost any modern pistol. For screw-in front sights, the correct nut driver. For revolvers and pinned sights, a punch and bench block.
Where can I buy a sight pusher?
Every tool on this page is on Amazon. MGW’s universal Sight-Pro is sold through MidwayUSA and Brownells, and Real Avid’s Master Sight Pusher through Real Avid directly.
